I disagree, it is a gift because it allows the species to choose to do good rather than just defaulting to natural programming. Sure good deeds and altruism can appear in non-sentient creatures, but you won't find a species of canid working together to save another species simply for the sake of maintaining biodiversity or looking at the bigger picture and understanding the role that bumblebees play in keeping entire biomes intact (for example).

Humans on the individual level as a sentient creature aren't really all that special, so much is up to chance as to how they act in life. Usually selfishly.

It's when they group up and work towards a better goal that sentience shows it's worth.

How is it not a gift? Nearly everything that has ever lived on this planet is as dumb as a bag of rocks compared to us, save for a few cephalopods, great apes, whales and dolphins - and even they don't come close to our intelligence.

You say that as if intelligence is some inherently good thing. Humans are forced to think. That's the problem. We understand death, and other species don't. We make up cosmic explanations for things when really there's just earth, flesh and bone. Other species don't need to grapple with that fact, they simply exist.

I accidentally killed my teddy bear hamster when I was 6. He kept trying to run off of my nightstand and me and my friend tried to catch him before he hit the ground, but we missed, and he snapped his neck. Why my mother left a hamster alone with two 6 year olds is beyond me... But I do still feel terrible for it 18 years later.

I stand corrected. One time the craziest freak accident happened with these mice or rats that were in our house. I was talking with my dad and I was about to turn on the dishwasher, and all of a sudden a rat ran into the dishwasher right as I turned it on. I covered my ears and then I was basically stunned. I still have no idea how the fuck that happened, but I don't feel bad about it at all. There were tons of rodents we were trying to trap and kill at the time, I just happened to take care of one.

You are measuring something that isn't measurable in nice clean repeatable instances as you would be with physics or chemistry. Humans are fickle, malleable and contrarian creatures so any science to do with measuring the human mind is going to have to be just as flexible.
