There's nothing wrong with hunting, especially safari hunting, if the prey is not of an endangered species.
Killing things to survive, eat and the like I don't see a massive problem with.
Killing things for fun, yeah there is something wrong there.

I really don't care how they try to justify the fact that they like to kill things for entertainment.

Hypocrisy.

I won't say she was doing anything charitable, but I don't have a problem with someone getting a once in a lifetime opportunity while painlessly ending a dying animal's life and feeding a village for a few days. This was no different from putting down the family dog.

That's not the whole story.

She is a prolific hunter (she won a reality TV show for it) and has posted many other images posing next to her kills. The claim that it was endangered and was used to feed villagers is heresay. Not calling her a liar, but it's impossible to verify.

The issue is less with the action of hunting and more with her glorification of it. That photo, and others she has taken, show that she gets both pride and enjoyment out of hunting, which are usually the ethically condemnable grounds. It is a sport first and a service to the animals second (if it even ranks that high).

Ricky could use his influence more productively than public defamation, on twitter of all things, but his disapproval is justified.

I'm not a hunter, and I don't think I'd be comfortable hunting, but I don't really see a problem in her joy and pride in participating in such a rare hunt, since it's a very special opportunity. She wasn't poaching, it wasn't a canned trophy hunt, and ultimately it did little but end the life of a dying animal. Honestly I think it's incredibly inappropriate to pose next to dead animals after a hunt, but I think Ricky is blowing this out of proportion.

People are weirdly overly sensitive when it comes to animals. More so than they are humans.
I killed, gutted, and eventually ate a deer as a preteen. So I guess I'm desensitized to all that stuff.  I'd go on safari if I had the chance.

But see, that's a loaded statement because you are saying that killing an animal is a "special opportunity" (rather than a tragic necessity) and that joy and pride are repectable feelings to have about it.

There should be nothing joyful about killing an animal. You might be proud of yourself for doing what had to be done (assuming that was the only option of course) but I don't think that was the type of pride you meant.

And it's anything but a special occasion. Getting to see an endangered animal is a special occasion, having to kill it is not. I'm not trying to be pedantic; these are the subtle, yet toxic views on hunting that need to be quashed. And the difference between taking pleasure in killing an animal and not taking pleasure is a significant one where ethics are concerned.

This isn't the only website I visit, I have posted in threads not related to veganism, and yes, it gets very boring -- but that's not a good reason to let people spread harmful and irrational misinformation and hold harmful and irrational beliefs.

I feel compelled to criticize irrational and harmful beliefs. I feel compelled to encourage reason and intellectual honesty.

I assume you echo these values, but since they clash with your own beliefs here, you dismiss them as "shoving my tree-hugging onto others".

Which is why the topic should be mined thoroughly when it arises.

Intellectual honesty and rational thought are qualities that should apply across the board. If someone claims to be a rational person, yet refuses to think rationally about something, they are not a rational person.

And it casts doubt on their motives for views they hold on other topics as well, even if those views happen to be correct.
