So, yesterday was the Womens March on Washington - which turned into marches spanning the globe, on every continent. By most accounts, it's one of the largest unified protest in modern history.

Below area couple images from various cities. A more complete list can be found here

DC:

Chicago

Nairobi, Kenya

Boston

Vancouver

Auckland, New Zealand

Any thoughts on yesterday? Where do you see the movement going from here? Is it a one-off protest, or does it grow to something more?

It's an impressive demonstration of a nonexistent platform. Paraphrasing my wife, but she resents their message that women must be liberal Clinton-supporters.

There were people near me protesting and I don't quite understand why given that I live in what is probably the most irrelevant part of a country that doesn't have any relevance to US elections to begin with.

There were no windows smashed or arrests, at least from what I've seen at the major protests (DC, Chicago, etc). They were largely peaceful gatherings.

And no, the protests did not aim at ousting Trump. No one ever claimed that was the goal

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
They were largely peaceful gatherings.

There was some smashed corporate property.

Judging by the clothes/tactics/flags, it was black-bloc anarchists who inserted themselves into the protests.

I know of smashed stuff from Friday, but nothing Saturday. DC police even reported 0 arrests.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.

The protesting crowds certainly were larger than the ones at the inauguration.

I'm just talking about the protests and riots in general. Seems a bit pointless protesting a democratic verdict especially in overseas countries when it doesn't even affect them.

I can't speak for the protests outside of the United States, but I don't imagine they gathered simply to protest Trump (Though as the US is seen as the leader of the free world, I imagine some did) - but to protest for their rights in that country, mirroring what we were doing here.

Not sure what point you're trying to make. These women's marches don't speak for her, yet claim to.

Just because they're called "women's marches" doesn't mean that they claim to represent literally every woman on the planet.

They're marches for the good of women, and are primarily composed of women. But I don't think they say "all women must be with us".

That's a bit of a strange question. People protest court rulings, election results, legislation, social changes and so forth without there being a real possibility of them changing anything. The reason these people protest is the same reason anyone protests pretty much ever. It's to make a statement. To show dissatisfaction and disagreement, and put an actual face on the opposition. Seeing some numbers in an online poll or survey are one thing, but actually having hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets and swarm entire cities sends a much more powerful message. In the eyes of many, Trump has shown himself to be a very narrow minded man with a lot of disdain for women, minorities and people different to himself, both through his actions and words. This is their way of showing that even though he's won and that the outcome is final, there's still millions of people living under him who fear what he might do and hold a lot of power as a collective. It's a reminder that those who disagreed with him and are worried about what he might do to their rights are not just a faceless number in statistics or a text message on Facebook that has made a complete 180, but are a very real and large part of society that shouldn't and can't just be ignored.

No one is expecting Trump to resign over something like this and I also don't know of any property damage or violence occuring at these rallies.
I never said the protests shouldn't be taking place, just that they're misplaced. For one, they seem to think the president has a lot more power than he actually does. "Trumpstapo wants to take away my rights as a woman, deport gays and mexicans and place me in forced labour wall construction" is a bit of a misnomer, if anything. Developed countries have a myriad of checks and balances in place for that precise reason, as you of all people should know.

By all means, they can exercise their right to protest, doesn't mean I should take them the least bit seriously. It's just virtue signalling wank of the highest calibre.

Why?

I'd explain why but it would turn into an argument, and I'm in no mood to argue.

No. I especially don't want to discuss this with you. We already butt enough heads on so much we disagree on.

If anything, I saw these protests as a way for the left to be rejuvenated after the crushing loss that fully showed the divide in the Democratic party. For as often as people talked about the Republican civil war, the Democrats were having one of their own, but it took this election to really draw it out.

Now these people are asking for a leader to lead them, and want things to change. I think people realize that their hubris let Donald win, and the media spinning it as though he had no chance, so why go vote? People were complacent and he won.

If anything, this election probably woke these idiots up who DIDN'T vote, because one can only ask "where were you 3 months ago?" But I understand why people didn't vote for Hillary, both due to Clinton fatigue, and all the baggage that came with her. So now the Democrats really need a leader, though preferably a young one.

It's not hard to get the Democrats back who voted for Obama or the working class white man, but they really need a message and a goal to rally behind. As stupid as MAGA was on hats, it was a rallying message. Democrats didn't have that.

So the next few years will present a challenge to see who exactly will lead. I'd put my money on Sanders, but he's in and out all the time, and the Democrats could really use someone younger who actually represents what these people want, rather than the same faces that've been in office with no competition the last 20 years.

the million dollar question is if this march will turn into action in any way, be it more effort on the local levels, or if it's just a one off. As much as I don't like the Tea Party, these people could take note and learn from how they came into office, and the efforts they went through on grassroots levels.
