Is this a thing? I'm currently discussing with some tumblrinas on Sapphire about 'fat acceptance' and food deserts keeps coming up.

This is actually the first I'm hearing of them. Is it a legitimate causation for the obesity crisis, or is it just a shitty excuse for unhealthy eating habits?

Doesn't that refer to rural areas where fresh produce and healthy food aren't available?

It's barely legitimate. Obesity is fundamentally about an excess in calories, not a deficit of nutrients. You could eat McDonald's every day and lose weight if you maintained a caloric deficit.

Hahahaha. What a fucking joke.

They should try being vegan--then they can talk about "food deserts."

Well, according to the USDA, A food desert is a geographic area where affordable and nutritious food is alleged to be hard to obtain, particularly for those without access to an automobile, and it sounds like a crock of shit if they're trying to pin America's obesity crisis on that.

Fat Acceptance =/= Fat Shaming

There isn't much cause to be unpleasant to someone for being overweight, but nobody in their right mind should be accepting/promoting it.

I have to agree with what others say, even the local gas stations near me offer fruits at the same price or lower than bags of Cheetos and Slim Jims. This is all on the individual and their purchasing habits when grocery shopping. I'm not an angel with my diet, I eat more junk food than everyone else in this thread combined, but I'm not a dumbass about my weight either.

Food deserts?

There is nothing wrong with fat shaming.

Self-hate is the first step toward self-improvement and self-love.
Eh, wouldn't necessarily agree with that. I would say self awareness is a more beneficial cognitive process towards inward improvement than self hate. From what I've personally experienced self hate just compounds itself into a nasty kind of "fuck it, I'm already at this stage in my life, I wont bother doing anything" thought process.

Yeah, shaming someone for something that they're obviously doing out of stress and guilt is a great way to make that problem go away. Not like that will just make them more stressed and guilty and eat more to feel better or anything.

People like you can't actually have the belief that you're "helping" anyone by sitting in your high chair and parroting down judgments.

If you don't like people pointing out the health repercussions that come with being overweight then perhaps you should do something about it then.

Would you go on to a person who self harms about how bad that is for them? Or would you try and fix the underlying causes?

So 68% of Americans all have mental health problems that cause them to overeat?

If you have an eating disorder, yeah that's shitty, and there's no need bully someone over it, but c'mon, it's a slim minority that have it.

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if a good chunk of them did. Regardless, you shouldn't shame anyone for the way they choose to live. I probably dislike fat people as much as you do, seeing as I was fat for the first 17 years of my life, but they're still people and they deserve support, not alienation.

Probably bull. If you don't eat that much, no diet can make you fat. It's not that difficult.

Big difference between "pointing out" what they already know and relentlessly hating on them because they look different from you.

Don't pretend all this fat shaming has anything whatsoever to do with helping people.

There are now more obese people on the planet than there are malnourished people.

Honestly, fat shaming is the least of my concerns at this point. Yeah, it's unnecessary and wrong to incessantly bully an individual person over something like weight, but the term has become so broad nowadays that simply pointing out medical facts can be considered 'fat shaming' and in some extreme cases a hate crime.

Perhaps a kick up the cellulite arse is what's needed.

Obviously pointing out medical facts is nowhere near a hate crime or fat shaming, but AGAIN, don't pretend that's some majority of people who fat shame. Most of the time it's just harassing people who are going about their day. And like it or not, you're in no position to tell people how to live their lives in the first place. Whether it's an obese guy or a guy addicted to heroin, that's none of your business at all.

Probably an excuse for laziness/unwilling to change. At least the majority

However I'm not one to fat shame. I'm very anti fat shaming. hormones and mental states have such a strong effect on your eating habits, it's insane until you're actually in the persons shoes.

When they collectively impact the cost of medical expenses and resources, it kind of is my business to tell them what they're doing effects more than just themselves.
