This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Which would it be?

It seems to me that most fictional governments (especially science fiction) are either corrupt, incompetent or authoritarian. 1984, Brave New World, the UNSC, the Ministry of Magic, ARM in Known Space, the Galactic Empire, China's communist government, the Protheans from Mass Effect, the Tau - all fictional and all authoritarian, for better or for worse.

So, if you know of any liberal/libertarian governments in fiction which you'd like to live under - name them. However, I'd also like you to choose from among the more undesirable fictional regimes you know.

I'd probably choose the government in Brave New World, or the Tau, if I had to. Both seem to keep their populations particularly content, instead of fearful.

If I was guaranteed an Alpha slot, maybe even a Beta slot, BNW wouldn't be so bad.
Granted, as a lower class in that world, I wouldn't realize that life sucks, but sitting here thinking about it I do.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
The Imperium of Man might be harsh and stupid, but at least I could help ensure good relations between Humans, Orks, and Demons.

The point being they do it while authoritarian.

I'm not saying they love seditious opinions and tolerate dissent.

Vespid leaders wear control helmets and it's implied that the Ethereal use pheromones to placate the other castes. However that only came about because people bitched about the Tau not being grimdark enough. The only bad thing that has ever happened to the Gue'Vesa is a non canon ending of Dark Crusade where the human population is sterilized for their rebellion.

If there's one unambiguously good faction in Warhammer 40k, then whoever designed them missed the point completely.

Can I choose one that I created for my own writing?

Spoiler
However, I wouldn't say the UNSC are authoritarian. They only ever acted in retaliation, even if nuking Far Isle was extreme. Though the URF were hardly any better. I would choose the country Rohan, as they're generally cool when their king isn't being mind controlled.

Brah, you know the Tau are my favorite faction.

Besides the Gue'la of Kronus had it coming in that ending. The Tau had been tolerating their human on tau violence for years before enacting that.

Hunger Games.

Seriously,  when you win you get fuck tons 9 money for killing people on national television.  Given humanity's blood - loving nature, you'd be a superstar when you emerge victorious.

tbh though, the New Republic/Jedi  Order from Star Wars

You mean the government that could barely hold it's legitimacy from Imperial remnant factions together and protect it's people from the Yuuzhan Vong?

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
BNW isn't a world I'd like to live in; it's void of empirical thought and filled with wonton debauchery. Not to mention that blind allegiance to a government organization that's been drilled into your head since birth.

To be honest, I can't think of a single fictional government I'd like to live under. They're all the same or worse than real ones, and anarchy is never a permanent or viable solution either, so I guess I'll roll with "nomadic desert tribe" even though that's not really a direct answer.
