i don't really know what to say

i guess i took issue with your claim that i claim to be an expert on these subjects--i don't, and the only reason i think anyone would come to that conclusion is because i go into these debates with such bravado

but it has nothing to do with me thinking i'm an expert--that's just my personality, and you can call that a flaw, i guess

everything else seemed reasonable--i'm not very in-tune with a lot of people's emotions a lot of the time, because i try to argue from pure logic & reason, which is fine, but i guess that makes me seem out-of-touch with people and why they behave the way they do

and i know why people do drugs--it doesn't make me feel any better about it, but i understand why if someone is depressed, they'd want to escape from it in any way that they can--but i still don't like that, because it doesn't feel like a real solution that cuts to the core of the problem to me (and i could be dead wrong)

so yeah i mean, i dunno, i can't really debate your post when i don't really vehemently disagree with much of what you said, beyond the small factual discrepancies

Ok I skimmed through the thread and I'll just start off by saying don't even try to argue for the benefits of drugs. They are shit. They are physically and physiologically unhealthy. And the biggest downside to hard drugs (in my opinion) is the world associated with them. Once you go down that road, you won't find yourself in the of environments or situations. So yes, Verbatim is right.

That being said, I do have a problem with his reasoning and logic. Verbatim, your opinions are so sterile and you pretend like human emotions and hard circumstances don't exist. You try to bring a 2D objective view to such an ambiguous topic like drugs and that shouldn't be how you approach something like this. You look down on people for taking drugs or drinking alcohol because they are negatively affecting themselves. But you fail to realize that some people are put in unfortunate situations and require escape. You group the degenerate no life junkie together with the struggling mom trying to pay rent if both take drugs. Yet you failed to realize the difference between the two (or maybe you don't care).

Also I have a credibility issue with you here. You pretend to be an expert on such things yet to my understanding, you've been sheltered your entire life and never had to deal with anything that might push you to such things. (Not to say I am an expert in such things but you are making the arguments so I want you to be aware of this). You had one beer once and that was the most you ever did as far as I know. So I don't see how you can take such an "objective" view to such things without fully understanding them. You claim to hold ethics above most things in life but you fail to empathize with people in situations you disapprove of. You give no leeway to people who don't do things your way. You come into every "debate" assuming you are right and that the objective is to convert people to your side instead of listening and understanding the point better.

You wish to eliminate suffering by removing everything harmful to people. Yet you don't realize that the pursuit of happiness is necessary to not suffer. And in the pursuit of happiness, people will stumble and fall and make mistakes. You cannot take away this factor because once you do, that is where suffering begins. The soul can't flourish so to speak. You can't say that the solution to human suffering is to not be human. A bit offtopic but I wanted to dab in on that.

But the point is, Verbatim, your type of reasoning doesn't work here because it doesn't account for the emotional side of things. You think people who do drugs are all grouped as one type of person and fail to realize the circumstances that might have gotten them there. Any gray area is ignored by you and you stick to the one dimensional "drugs are bad view". This is all based on what I've seen and I have no doubt I'm probably wrong/misled on some of my info about you here but I'm trying to get you to see another vantage point to the "problem".
