The only sports games I would ever recommend to people that actually have effort (as in I feel the devs actually try to put effort into it) are FIFA, and MLB: The Show.

I tried to get into Elder Scrolls Online and holy shit... that game was the most lifeless and most meh-est game I think I have ever played. At least I got it used.

You're not really doing a good job explaining what you mean I don't think. But the next quote fixes that, so thank you. Basically, I'm talking about the ability to express yourself through the game, like you can do with paint. In football, you have a series of lines and formations to choose from which are designed to either bring the ball over to the endzone as efficiently as possible, or make it extremely difficult for the other team to do the same thing. It's a game, and you can become emotionally invested in it, but there's very little self-expression in that.. Sorry, but that's not the football I'm on about. I don't like American Football that much because there is too much stopping. I'm on about soccer, which is constantly in motion (and if you want, I could describe showing emotion and desperation in that). I understand the point you're making now, but I still don't see how a fighting game really does that, the same way you're explaining it with football in the most basic of forms. There's a reason that sports aren't considered art and video games are I agree with you that video games CAN be art, but that one is still heavily debated.

You're diving into arguably the most overrated (it's still good) Zelda game. Have fun. I'd recommend Wind Waker after that since the story... somewhat plays into Ocarina, making it much more emotional.

I don't really trigger at the sports thing because I know year to year is bullshit (hence why I skipped the first next gen FIFA). In fact I'd argue 15, and 17 are the only ones in next gen you'd really want to get.
For me I get you can play IRL, which is always a blast and good for you, but I personally take joy in taking a somewhat bad team, and slowly making them better and rising them to the top. Be it finding diamonds in the rough, scouting players, buying them, and smartly selling them, I like the idea that I have total control and can turn an otherwise meh Football Club, into something of a legendary tale.
And then I can even go coach a national team and make big upsets in the world. I felt so proud tying Spain when I was managing Hungary, a team no one really gave much of a chance.
That's really the joy I find in playing the game. Exhibition matches and that Ultimate Team (like a card game) don't interest me in the slightest.

Here, we have one of the greatest and most emotional street fighter 4 sets in history.
Even if you know nothing about Gamerbee or his story, you can just taste his lust for victory in this match. He's competing against one of the fiercest opponents the game has ever seen on the biggest stage for fighting games ever. His desperation and determination are palpable, and towards the end, you can tell how absolutely drained and worn-out Infiltration is.
You can have that emotional investment with literally anything, sports games too.

Why not try something far more simple that doesn't require as much deviation? All those games have some investment to them (minus Halo 5 I guess?).
Maybe try some Indie game, or some classic game. Someone named Final Fantasy (ignore Second Class on FF6 though, most old school fans think it's the best)
