Suffering is essentially not attaining or fulfilling your desires. No. Wrong. Not attaining or fulfilling your desires is a neutral state of mind. Suffering is inherently negative. If you were to put that shit on a number line, feeling suffering would always be a negative experience. Not feeling happiness isn't inherently a bad thing. It's not even really a quantifiable thing.
Suffering usually comes with an actual loss of something, whether it be physical or mental. It isn't simply "not" having gained anything.
It is the nature of the ego is have attachments and desires, they can be conscious or intuitive but, in the end, they will always be there, and they are not the same for everyone. It is entirely possible for someone to not have the desire to feel happiness. And it is entirely possible to someone to have the desire to not feel sadness. If one is suffering it is because they are experiencing something that they do not desire and as such arises the desire to no longer have said experience ergo so long as they continue to experience said phenomena then they at least one of their desires is not being fulfilled.
