Now this may not actually help since it's all anecdotal evidence, but get a job where you have to interact with the public while you're in school.
Not only are you forced to interact with the public in a sink or swim kind of situation, but you'll make contacts through work that'll get you invited to parties that will further expand your opportunities and interactions with IRL person to person contact.
I've had jobs. I go to college. I already do all this.
I'm not shy at all. I'm too talkative.
It was intended for people who clam up when talking to people IRL.
