Wow. That's one hell of a letdown.

Knowing how to program and do art =/= game design.

Everyone gets shit on this website. We're the most disfunctional community I've ever been a part of.

I have prototypes if you want to see them.
Do you happen to have design documents for them?

It's game prototypes in Unity, as far as documentation goes, I have a readme file included.

Lol.

That build looks so much better than the final product...and bosses dropping loot that you can equip right away? That's what the game needed instead of going back to the Tower to the Cryptarch.

I agree actually. Even on PS4 the game still feels very limited and incomplete.

Looking back at this now, I cannot wrap my head around why Activision ordered Bungie to cut out so many things out of this build for the final game, they had everything all setup. And if it wasn't Activison and was Bungie's idea, I don't get why.

Also.... $500 million dollars was a fuck load of money, they made their money back but still. Can someone tell me what was wrong with this?

I don't hate what we have now for Destiny, but it went from "Hey, this is probably going to be a good game" to "Meeehhh, it has no story but still a better love story than twilight."

Don't you just hate it when all the good shit gets cut?

15518

I play the games for the campaigns nowadays.  If Halo 5's campaign is as well-written as 4's then I'll be happy.

>Halo 4
>Well-written

LMFAO that's the funniest thing I've ever this week
that seems to be a popular sentiment here for some reason. dont ask me why though. h4 was trash all the way through. a stain on the franchise.

I agree, I thought Reach was the worst it can get but Halo 4 proved me wrong.

I enjoyed Reach's campaign. I don't take it as canon really, but it was fun. The cutscenes were certainly top tier.
it was pretty... best aesthetic direction bungie took for any of their games imo. but the writing was fucking abysmal. the characters were bigger idiots than the crew in Prometheus. there was no real character development that made me care about any of them except for Emile and Jorge. made the entire tragedy feel so much less like what it was

Pretty much. I also believe that the game was made with an earlier version of Destiny's engine.

That's debatable actually. AI code for allies is far from perfect. Fucking Kat drove the warthog off the cliff. Also, the cut scenes may have been nice, but some of them had frame rate issues. That could be more of a hardware limitation than software though.

Hence work in progress.. By the way, ODST is being given to us, for FREE (As long as you have MCC of course).. Little room for bitching to be honest

Actually, no it isn't. See, 343 made a deal with satan. They give us ODST for free so we can enjoy it in glorious HD. But only if they killed the main character off so that no more ODST in glorious HD can ever be made again.

Them sneaky fucks.
More than one ODST exists you know.
Rookie wasn't even really a character. He was just a plot/story vehicle.

The Rookie was suppose to be the player from what I know. That's why he never spoke. As in you the player identify with the rookie.

The people that made the previous Halos are currently working on it. I'm sure they know than some kid

I'm not "some kid," you are in no position to put me down. I still know far more than anyone on this site in terms of making a game currently. Unless someone from the video game industry joins Sep7agon, you're all I have right now, and I would know far more than you could possibly ever imagine.

One of my projects originally was going to be a Sep7agon brawl battle, but I decided to axe it out entirely because the community here keeps giving me shit instead of positive enforcement. It's not too late to start all over again though, but I doubt I will unless a major change happens here. All you guys got so far as far as content goes was the Sep7agon Theme for the 360, and I did that. The only thing that I did not create was just the Sep7agon logo, but the background, color scheme, that's all my work.
fucking around in blender isn't game design, deci

Okay, first of all, I don't even use blender. That's a modeling program. I use Autodesk Maya for that, which when it comes to character modeling, Zbrush is slowly going to replace, Autodesk Mudbox is a texturing and digital sculpting program, and I use that too, you can get those for free if you're a college student.

And if my computer didn't get fucked last time I would have had a complete Halo 2 PC Map under my portfolio using 3DS Max 7 with the Bungie .ASS exporter, I am still really fucking angry at myself for not backing it up, that was weeks and weeks of work, and it wouldn't always open it in the Halo 2 engine due to Pathway issues, once I fixed that I was so happy that I could finally add in the in game assets and set the map up for Halo 2, long story short, I did something unrelated to the whole map project, something that obviously knew would fuck the machine up if I opened the .exe, and boy did I have a fuck load of malware to the point where the Windows boot manager for Windows 7 got deleted. I'm mad about it to this day, I can try making the map again but I lost the passion to do so. Maybe this summer I'll reinstall 3DS Max 7 or 8 and get back to it. It has to be either of those programs because the .ASS exporter doesn't work with any recent version of 3DS Max, let alone any other modeling program. So fucking yeah!

Aside from that the only engine I fuck around with is UDK, I develop with Unity, and since Unity 5 just came out, I have more tools to use for my projects this time to create some high quality environments.

Next time educate yourself and do a bit more research before attempting to insult me again, because you're pretty bad at it so far. I know my shit, and I swear if there were MORE game development courses to take in my area aside from the 3 that I have aced, I'd hop right to it, better yet if there was a job offering for anyone who has knowledge with Unity in the area, I'd fucking run over there right now and apply.
what languages do you know?

HTML, CSS, UnityJS.

I'm not a real programmer if that's what you're thinking. I'm more on the art side when it comes to this stuff.

If you were confused about pathways, I meant file directories, it was disorganized and I had to enable hidden folders in order to move them around and properly export the map with all of it's contents. It took fucking forever because 3DS Max was being stubborn.

I had tuts for making a map but I had no tut to fix 3DS Max's exporting, that was something I had to figure out on my own until I finally got the fucking thing to work in the Halo 2 engine. I read that it has something to do with Guerrilla or Seipan, but either way something was up.

But yeah, I obviously hate Bungie because I don't think every single Halo game they made is god tier amazing.

I thought Halo 2 was pretty good aside from the bugs, Halo 3 I'll admit was really short and not as satisfying, but the multiplayer made up for it. Originally Halo 2 and 3 were suppose to be one game.

Halo 2 was nothing but a giant bug.

I'm sure he was being sarcastic here. Also, that drab made Bungie a fuck load of money because everyone including you bought it.

And I rather play that drab than any of the games made by 343 personally. The drabs had the right feel.

So yeah I rather have it turned back into that drab Bungie put out.

Oh yeah, and that first drab, combat evolved modernized first person shooters today. It set a standard.
I didn't buy CE. Nor did I buy H2. I got Halo 3 off of a friend for £5.
The only times I've given Bungie money is for ODST and Reach.

343 are better writters, so I'd rather not go back to Bungie post-Halo 2 with their mediocrity.

Clearly you can't write. Even though I disagree with you and think that the newer titles by 343 are COD copycat clones, that doesn't matter. You have to thank Bungie for at least conceiving the idea in the first place, because you wouldn't even be able to enjoy 343's.

And if you think Bungie's shit, why did you even sign up on the site anyway? Should have never joined the community.

Really, correcting grammar and spelling mistakes? And I think we have other media to thank than Bungie. They basically stole the ideas from the ring world and Alien franchise and made a game out of it.

I'll be honest with you, I did not know this.

Well yeah, 343 is playing the COD game with Halo 5 because that's where this new generation of gamers are. Run and gun is more profitable than a game with a steep learning curve.

Unfortunately, it is.

15532
dude, there's no money in video game development (if that's what you're after), and no one will care about the games you make if it's a hobby unless they're good (they probably will never be), so you're gonna have to learn to be content with what you create regardless of what others think of it if you really want to do this

I have passion for it, not money.

And I agree.

Just with the recent feedback of how people label me as a wannabe dev after everything I have learned so far, I feel like what's the point of continuing if this crowd is going to keep throwing me under the same label?

The reason why people say that is because you try to take something you've learned that works in a consolidated area, and try to apply to to other games. The latest example being your Halo thread. You act like a know it all, when in reality you don't. It comes off as stupid and childish.

Anyway, why do you care what people on a  backwater forum think?

Sometimes I just wonder if I should continue, let alone continue to learn anything new a this point in the world of game development. I'm not going to stop anytime soon, but I wouldn't call myself a wannabe, I'd say I'm intermediate at best.

I don't get the hate honestly. Yeah they're just Unity projects (that personally I find unfinished and sucky) I never stated that I make AAA games, and I have yet to work on a AAA project for the masses.

It's because of the attitude you have towards criticism and thinking you know better than others. You come off like a Phil Fish impersonator.

Quote
He was so bad I was tempted to throw my entire portfolio in the bin and just get rid of my games and consoles.

What..? You wanted to throw away all your work because you had a bad professor? ....what...?

I don't think Sep7agon is the place to come for that sort of thing.

Quote
I want to hear your thoughts should I continue to learn and practice game development, or should I just call it quits?

If you enjoy it, then do it. Just don't be a smug Phil Fish about it.

That's the last person I want to be with. I don't like Phil Fish for so many reasons and I refuse to buy any of his products. He comes off as very unprofessional.

By community I meant the overall community of things, not just Sep7agon.

15534
Here's a better question. Why do you give a flying fuck what anyone thinks?

Because without constructive criticism you can't get better?

Actually, that's a load of shit.

I'll say this. I've been writing stories on my own for about three years now. When I started, all the way up to now, I never received help. I never once, had anybody run through what I wrote and spellcheck. Never once had anybody check for redundant, repeating words, which is an incredibly hard thing to curb by yourself.

I never once had anybody sit down and talk to me about a mistake I made. And while I could be somewhat prideful and say that I am a good writer of stories, I made mistakes. Because from there to now, I've changed. Learned and grown. And I did it all myself, on my own.

Now, I know that writing, isn't comparable to game development. But the principle concept of "constructive criticism" is exactly the same.

Bottom line is this.

Nobody's going to fucking help you. And that's the truth. And, I know that doesn't seem very optomistic regarding your question. But I'll ask you a question of my own.

Did I let the fact that nobody out there wanted, or did help me with my writing stop me?

Did I let the fact that my writing, being what it was, would probably never receive much in the way of recognition, or praise, and only enjoyed by a small select group of people stop me?

Did I let the fact, that I was the only one writing my stories, ever stop me?

No.

Your number one rule, should always be this.

You do what you want to. You work on what you want to. You make what you want to. And you learn, at your own pace. The more you work, and study, the more you'll learn over time. And the sole reason you do it, is for your own enjoyment.

Every other person, whether they're there, or they aren't, are just simply there for the ride. If they don't like your ride, they can get the fuck off it. If they like your ride, then fantastic, good for them. If they want possibly to suggest things to help make your ride better, then fuck, let them.

But never ask them.

You are the performer, and they are the audience no matter how big or how small. As a creator of anything, you should only be doing what you do for yourself. You should create, because you love to create.

People liking and enjoying what you make, or taking any time to comment and help you, are just icing on the cake. But they aren't necessary.

You have a valid point actually. I could learn more from your wisdom honestly. Thank you man.

15535
Here's a better question. Why do you give a flying fuck what anyone thinks?

There was one time in my life after having a really shitty instructor telling us to not do anything and good outside, he was suppose to teach us Unreal, but he was really bad at it. He was not a dev at all like my last professor who has been in the industry. He was so bad I was tempted to throw my entire portfolio in the bin and just get rid of my games and consoles.

If I didn't take another class with my old professor, which had something new to offer, I would have lost all of my passion.

Fun fact: A small team created ODST, it was a small project to begin with.
I'm aware of this. It also says a lot about Bungie.
Quote
I'm pretty sure with a lot of time and passion and dedication, it would have been a full port.
Well obviously, but time isn't really a luxury they have whilst fixing the MCC, porting ODST and working on Halo 5.
Quote
I highly doubt lack of developers is the problem here. 343 is a big studio
Yeah, they have over 200 people at this point, but big games requires a lot of time, money and people.
Quote
I don't see what's stopping Firefight from not being feasible, because so far it can be feasible.
Not right now it isn't, you know, for the reasons I've already stated in this very post. Also the fact that fixing ODST's piss poor netcode would just require even more time and people they don't have right now.
Quote
I blame the publishers more than anything however, they rush the living shit out of developers, always have.
The corporate suits don't care if a game is finished or not. That's why BF4, AC Unity and MCC were a wreck.
Quote
That's why Halo 2 was a wreck when it got launched, hell it had to be delayed even to fix a crouch toggle issue before it launched.
Halo 2 was also an unfinished buggy wreck because it was development hell. Bungie basically started all over again when developing it.
Quote
Anyway, I'm just stating that more is always better than less
Only if it works. Porting FF to the Xbone just to have it there but in a terrible state would be worse than it not being included.

Well, then the lesson here is to not sell any of the stuff you have from last gen if you really enjoyed them.

Want ODST Firefight? Stick with the 360.
Stop being a mong. ODST's FF not being included in the MCC ODST isn't anything like the horse shit Don Mattrick was spewing.

FF isn't included because they'd be spread out even thinner, which would impact Halo 5.
i feel like ODST firefight would be a fucking nightmare to port
Exactly. It isn't the most stable thing as it is already.
yeah. i dont know how netcoding works, but i do know that ODST's was broken as all hell, and that would NOT be fun to fix.

Porting FF with it having a poor netcode as it is on top of the MCC's instability would render FF near pointless because it'd be essentially unplayable.
