For your processor I would highly recommend an Intel i7 or above, for your graphics card, you can't go wrong with Nvidia. RAM? You want at least 8 gigs of it. For your motherboard I suggest getting one from Gigabyte.
As for your OS, I'd either get 7 or 8.1 It won't matter soon because you'll be able to get Windows 10 for free when it's out.

It is what you like to do and you will get better in time. I myself plan to get into game development/design once I get out of high school, and if there's one thing you need to realize before you get into it, is that there will always be people trying to put you down. Trust me, there is a difference between constructive criticism and flat-out being a dick.

The problem is that actual devs would be hard-pressed to say that a career in the video game industry is worth pursuing.

You ask constructive criticism from other people in the industry, just look around and you will find plenty of game developer communities ready to help you out on understanding any issues you may come by. Only rarely and selectively you should ask players, or if you can stomach then swim through the seven seas of hate and cynicism to find a few gems. (It doesn't seem that you are capable of doing that, though)

Game design really is more of a long shot to anyone, you have to be extremely talented/lucky to get a job in the industry, especially if you're specializing in that one thing. I used to wanna become a game programmer, but I knew I was limiting myself to just games and barely anything for computer science I just gave up. It's more of a pipe dream, make some indie game in your free time, but to me, I'd just build a small game and have a different career path.
Game design isn't limited to video games. It's Board games, card games, and really any other sellable game you can think of.
The principles of what makes a game good are nearly universal across all mediums. The tricky part is balancing the universal aspects with the vision for the game you have defined.
Well if I fail to make an entertainment product, I can always try creating a Training Sim for the military or something.

I've spent the last 2-3 years programming the most mediocre shit in the world, never being anywhere near good enough to relate my stuff to that of a "real" developer. Only until these last few months has everything I've learned in my time of reading APIs, textbooks on AI, game engine architecture, etc... started to come together.
A year ago, I could make a fairly buggy flash game with nothing impressive. Now, I'm working with networked multiplayer games over cloud servers in Unity/Unreal, procedurally generated models + terrain, custom lighting shaders, etc... in a custom game engine using DirectX and OpenGL. You just got to keep at it, because it picks up if you find something interesting.
Once again: you're really letting people on this forum get to you too much, dude. Also, calling you a mediocre game dev isn't constructive criticism: the industry would be dead if devs quit every time kids on forums said "this sucks".
You're right man. Games would be a thing of the past if that happened, and I remembered how I got my passion for wanting to make games 3 years ago, and I still do want to continue. We should collaborate on a project sometime, I could use your netcoding skills, I don't know netcoding.
