Serious / What do you think of 'Squatter's Rights'?« on: September 22, 2014, 09:50:55 PM »
If you aren't familiar with the term -
https://www.gov.uk/squatting-law/overview I know that's UK related but with the USA I bet that each state has it's own law/code for dealing with this. I'm pretty repelled by the idea that someone can break into a building and claim it as their own, but maybe that's just old fashioned thinking... ._. 15695
Serious / Re: Based Dawkins BTFO's feminist shills« on: September 22, 2014, 09:48:25 PM »The trouble is, Dawkins tends to be a real hit and miss guy.I actually agree with this sentiment. Perhaps, I can certainly see the argument for it. I just don't really agree with it, people with Downs don't have a life ruining disability, even some of the worst disabilities don't necessarily ruin people's lives. I can see the argument for things where the child is likely to die painfully and unpleasantly within a few years of their birth but I think it's wrong to assume that because people aren't born 100% healthy that their lives will be a miserable and bleak existence. I know it gets said endlessly when this topic of discussion comes up, but people with Downs are some of the happiest and loving people on the planet. You compare that with the sort of person who would deny them a chance at life because of how they are... I don't think that it's really alright to abort people because of a disability. To clarify though, that doesn't mean I oppose abortion with some blanket view, for some families it's the only option and demonising them for it is sickening. But yeah, I don't think that it is moral to abort people because they aren't going to be born fully able. 15696

It would not surprise me, but I bet that if NATO tries to intervene in say... oh I don't know... Ukraine? To stop ethnic cleansing of course, but that would go down about as well as you can imagine with the NUSSR.

The fact that you think claiming insanity will get you off the hook would show that you are actually in your right mind whether you've killed a bunch of people or not. Serious / Re: [Psykana] Hyperbole and a Half - Depression« on: September 22, 2014, 10:30:37 AM »Yeah I don't get it. Unless it's some sort of mental disease and changes the balance of chemicals and doesn't allow you to feel certain feelings or any at all, seems like a bunch of babies. The shortest answer I can give over this, outside of getting off my ass and finishing the second thread on depression which is supposed to help clear things up >.>, is the following. For some people, they are born with a predisposition to depression. This is where the biological/genetic factors come in as a primary cause, it's not like you will be born miserable by any means but it is set off more easily than in others. Same sort of thing with Schizophrenia, but Depression can have many more causes than simply genetics/biology (But it plays a significant role in it). So if you take someone who is born with that predisposition and throw them through the wringer, then the chances are they will end up with depression. It can also happen in people who aren't born with that predisposition but are thrown through a specific line of shit (Basically not every trial and tribulation has the potential to trigger depression, but I find that it tends to be a sustained pressure that causes it rather than multiple incidents of shite.) You add so much pressure to the canister that it's at breaking point, but rather than it exploding as you would expect (Going postal etc) the top flies off and all the pressure vanishes leaving a void. That void is what sucks you in and keeps you there until you can break out of it yourself, but by yourself it's pretty much impossible - Hence the need for help with a lot of people. I know that's not exactly brief but it might clear things up a little, and I'll start actually working on Part 2 rather than procrastinating for 6 months again >.> 15712
Serious / Re: [Psykana] Hyperbole and a Half - Depression« on: September 22, 2014, 10:23:01 AM »Depression is something that people don't understand unless you've dealt with it first-hand, including myself. Friends and family have struggled with it, but I've never had it myself, so it still doesn't make sense. That's not to say that I don't think it's a serious, legitimate issue This is pretty much it, the biggest problem with depression is that it's such an alien mindset that unless you have gone through it yourself it's very hard to properly understand. It's not hard to learn about it, to study it or to be supportive of people with it but understanding it is very difficult. 15713

Serious / Why do you hold the political/social views that you do?« on: September 21, 2014, 10:08:20 PM »
I know this is quite a broad question and I expect some vague answers, but take any example you like and consider why you hold those views in the first place >.>
I'll post one for me when I wake up tomorrow, I don't think 4am is too conducive to coherent thinking <.< As promised, here we go <.< Spoiler I started off as a fairly close minded leaning towards the right sort of chap, I'll put that down to both Ignorance and having the Daily Mail as the only newspaper in the house for years. (8-11) Then when I started High School, it sort of mixed a little. I still had the old conservative programming which reacted badly to seeing the scum that I had to share the school with, (The reasoning for this bad reaction in the first place isn't just from reading the Daily Fail, but from all the shit that was going on with my mum) So that sort of negative reaction to seeing people drinking/discussing drugs and the sex really didn't help open my mind up. So then towards the end of High School I was basically a Conservative with a bit of religious fervour mixed in there. The religious fervour is a joke, because I was actually an atheist at the time (Agnostic now) but I still held true to a lot of the old testament beliefs. Yeaaaah, lynch me/bite me/whatever. I'm not saying Only eat fish on a friday sort of shit but the whole righteous/degenerates dichotomy thing was going on. Then when I finally started on forums/started sixth form, my mind opened up a little. Bit by bit, there were certainly some painful teething problems that I remember quite clearly, but they happened with good reason because without them I'd probably still be a fairly close minded prick. So over the last two years, I've gone from Fire and Brimstone for the sinnahs! to Treat everyone equally, nicely and even to the point of arguing for the rights of various groups >.> So with that ramble done, the tl;dr is this. Started off as a kid with the Daily Mail and the Bible, went into high school as a right leaning/conservative/walk the righteous path sort of bollocks. Came out of high school with this sort of eroded, but still present. Spent time on forums/talking with people online/skype/whatever and basically opened up my mind. And here I am now, a Centre-Leftist <.< Not quite like Meta's Commie-Thatcherite conversion but still a bit of a swing >.> 15715

The Flood / Re: I need your help« on: September 21, 2014, 09:25:37 PM »So, I have to get some questions answered and commented on by tomorrow, and I haven't really had any time to get anyone IRL to answer them, so do me a favour and just give an answer to each of the questions, I could fabricate the answers, but I trust you guys to assist me on this, and I value your opinions, so: #1 - Fuck no. If you can't put that as a response then try 'No, it should never be allowed.' #2 - No. This I take it falls under the medical experimentation on animals query, which is wrong anyway. It's unreliable modelling to assume that one drug that works on a chimp will work on a human, but to simply use them as disposable tools to find out if anything has horrific instant side effects is despicable. Find another way, but torturing animals for the 'benefit' of humanity is just downright deplorable. #3 - On a personal level, Yes. But for an actual thought out response, I'm just going to steal Meta's <.< 'No. The question of animal rights being as important as human rights is a subjective, moral question but must ultimately fall to jurisprudence. A society cannot properly function is people are, on the whole, not considered more important than animals.' Reword it if you need to for your homework. 15718
