Let's assume that a psychotic depressive woman is suffering from a psychotic break and, in her delusion, microwaves a kitten.

A tragedy, of course, but is she morally culpable.

Although, I actually want this to be a serious-enough off-shoot of the moral responsibilities of mentally ill people in general. From paranoids to (if you consider them ill) psychopaths.

The fact that you think claiming insanity will get you off the hook would show that you are actually in your right mind whether you've killed a bunch of people or not. They do take things like that into consideration when people try to use the insanity defence.

Hm, would depend on the type of mental illness. Depression is a mental illness and nearly 80% of people have one time or another have experienced it, but they're perfectly fine. On the other hand, you have illnesses that removes the ability to a person to actually understand what they are doing and make a form of rational choice, such as a person that's paranoid schizophrenic.

What it really comes down to is if a person can pass the legal definition of insanity and there's mental illnesses/people with illnesses that are not found to be legally insane
