Mechanically and OST wise I'd say it's the best in the series, but the weapon balance is pretty awful and the game itself is pretty heavy with the DS1 fanservice.

there's maybe one or two things a season that are actually good, but i don't stay on top of what's being aired every season so i couldn't tell you what's currently airing
you're also looking at funimation which picks whatever licenses it thinks will give it the best returns, so you're looking at a higher percentage of shit than normal

I don't really think any of them are highly debatable. At the time they were released they were all good games. It's true that not all of them have aged gracefully though. Plenty of people can't stand 3D Mario platformers--Sunshine in particular is probably one of the least-liked Mario games in the core franchise. And Halo 1 flat-out sucked. Its multiplayer and its multiplayer alone carried it to its success.
They were popular, sure, and lots of people liked them--but you already know that this does not make a game good.
Just because it's the least liked of the 3D Mario games doesn't mean it's bad. The campaign of CE up until two betrayals was also pretty good at the time. Remember CE set the standard for years and most first person shooters that came after it borrow it's mechanics. Think of CE like a model T, great for its time, but doesn't hold a candle to its modern day iterations. If someone were to release a CE clone called Paylo: Wombat Involved it wouldn't be held in the same regard as CE because our standards have risen since then.

I'm well aware of how metacritic works. I was using it as a quick and dirty resource to show the general reception to it. That being said your quote works against you because a game can have all the good ideas in the world, bit if it's bad at the execution, you know the actual game part of the game, it's still a bad game no matter how you try to spin it. Which is why I say you're more forgiving than most since people will generally call a game bad if the game part of it isn't up to snuff.

Umm, the metacritc average is a 54. I also said "near universally" not universally. I'm well aware gamestops marketing magazine gave it a good score to sell copies.
50-ish is closer to "mixed reception" imo, but it's semantics.
And Game Informer gave it an 8.25 btw, Destructoid and VentureBeat gave it 7s.
You're pretty generous then because getting averaging at a 54 would be considered failing to most others.

I'm hoping Atriox doesn't die in this game and we get him in other things. The banished would be a good replacement for the covenant in future Halo games.
343i said they want to keep him around, but with their track record from Escalation onward, I wont be surprised if he's killed of in the in the game case's inserted pamphlet.
I don't think they make those pamphlets anymore so it'll probably be in a tweet or a facebook post.
