The Flood / Re: Convince me anyone making more than 250k
« on: October 04, 2018, 06:52:03 PM »
Post-depression, the average american work week consisted of about 35 hours a week up until recently.
Are you sure that number isn't including part-time workers and the unemployed? 35 is roughly the current work week, including them.

Things also cost a lot less in these countries. The solution here is for the government to subisdise the cost of living which they can only do through taxation. You don't make as much in Portugal, but you also don't need as much.
Accounting for this discrepancy, America is still doing better than these countries.

"Everyone less successful than me is either stupid or lazy."

Dude cmon characterising poor people as being poor because of their own decisions is just bullshit and demonstrates a complete lack of experience on your part.
Being bad with finances is a factor whether you want to believe it or not. I have two coworkers that get paid the same, and one has a house and property, a vehicle, a smartphone, and disposable income while the other one would say he can't afford any of that, yet every morning he spends ~$20+ on lottery tickets. I'm not trying to generalize everyone, which is why I said it's my subjective experience, but it's a factor. Doing the exact opposite and saying they're all victims isn't any more enlightened of an opinion.

I want to elaborate on this further but I have to get off for now.

Quote
I also don't blame people for dreaming of winning the lottery. Most do, not because they want to be rich (most of them say they'd still work, and whether you think they would or not is irrelevant) but because they want to get above water and not be stressed out all the time about making ends meet. The stress also goes into how much our societies decide to drink and abuse substances. "I have one day off a week, I'm going to get as fucked up as possible and try to enjoy the miniscule amount of time I have to myself before I have to go back to my shitty job."
I've heard most people that win big on the lottery blow through it and end up poor again.

Quote
There are ways to combat it though (like what I'm suggesting), and I'm not really saying we should change it; I'm just making sure you understand the reality of capitalism.
Yes I understand how capitalism works.

Quote
Historically people have never worked this much before. I'm not sure how anyone can defend what is pretty much straight-up slavery.
This is just straight up false. Where are you getting this information?

Quote
So what, we just do nothing? No, we emulate societies where it does work.

That's because the UK is just a slightly better version of America and tries to emulate it too much. Portugal, Spain, France, Germany... these countries aren't perfect but they certainly have a far less depressed society and a much larger emphasis on worker's rights and the separation person from job.
All of these countries have a far smaller average income than the United States. I'm not too familiar with these countries, so I might be missing something, but working fewer hours just to get less income doesn't seem like a solution.

This is something I see every day. It's consistent with almost everyone I speak with.
I would argue the problem is our materialistic society, that encourages people to make poor financial decisions. Yes, capitalism encourages this, but renovating our entire economic system seems a little drastic. In my subjective experience, the people with less disposable income are often the ones spending more on shit like lottery tickets, cigarettes, alcohol, etc.

Quote
By being immoral and taking advantage of other people, yeah. You can't get rich without stealing from your workers (charging more for a product than you paid your workers to create it.)
There is no way to change this while still being a capitalist country.

Quote
Maybe a factory worker shouldn't be "rich," (no one can be rich without making others poorer) but no citizen should have to sacrifice one major aspect of their life just to make ends meet. The major aspects being: family, mental health, and physical health. You can't do that if you're working 12 hours days.
Obviously subjective, but I agree people should have a choice, which I believe they do. The average American work week is 47 hours. Accounting for sleep, you get more hours to yourself than work.

Quote
"Go live somewhere else you fucking commie"
All I was trying to point out was that the problems you're trying to fix are far more prevalent in the systems you're proposing we move towards.

Quote
No actually, I'd like to live in a world where people get 3 days off a week, a month vacation off a year, leave at 4:30 every day and actually get to see their families and loved ones on a consistent basis. This is not unrealistic, because (most of) Canada, Europe and other developed parts of the world are like this. Not just the socially democratic parts of Europe, either.
Judging by Fedorekd's posts, Europe doesn't seem to have this all figured out either.

wow these are some pretty confrontational posts for someone displaying no understanding of this topic whatsoever

First of all the "90% tax rate during the 40s-50s" is misleading at best. I'm pretty sure this has only come up recently because Bernie wanted to pretend like his tax plan wouldn't have been the highest in American history (it would have). Back then, there used to be so many deductions and loopholes that it's not even worth comparing them to taxes today.

https://taxfoundation.org/taxes-rich-1950-not-high/

This idea that you have to slave away for 60 hours a week just to make pennies more has no basis in reality. Basically everybody that's made it to "the top" had to invest in their future and take heavy risks. No they didn't spend 40 hours a week on a factory line like some people have to, but they gained skills that are more profitable.

If this is really such a problem, maybe you'd prefer a socialist paradise like China where there is no work/life balance, just work, because everybody lives in fear of being replaced.

But what if the high-earners just pile that money and keep it out of circulation, making everyone else poorer? Shouldn't the money be put back into circulation somehow - say, through the wages paid to workers in the public sector?
In this scenario, yes. But this trend isn’t happening in the United States or any similar countries that I’m aware of.

It would also probably more effective to come up with laws to mitigate whatever’s causing this, rather than just letting the government circulate all the money.

Because taxes should be a reflection of how much the government needs to spend, not how much you want to micromanage the lives of high-earners.

I would take the offer, not for the money but for experience and addition to your credentials.

However, keep in mind I'm incredibly ambitious and a total workaholic so both of those things is swaying my response.
This was also my angle. I wouldn’t consider myself a workaholic but this is coming from a guy who graduated 4 months ago and hasn’t been able to land a job in my field since.  I wish I would have done more to distinguish myself when I had the chance (internships, clubs, etc.)

what is it that you are trying to do?
Software Developer-type positions.

If I remember writing
If this means you’ve been drinking, I’d recommend cutting it. For me, I’ve noticed a pretty big correlation between alcohol and “depression”. I don’t think I have clinical depression tho.

But if you basically just see it as an odd job, not worth the time then don’t do it.

I mean it sounds like a no-brainer to me, unless you’re already struggling with work/life balance. I think your 20s is the time you should be jumping on opportunities like these when you might not be able to later in life. Up to you, but I’d probably do it.

I give the story a 9/10, gameplay 7/10. Overall: 8/10 I guess.

I agree with some of Eli’s points. The story was pretty solid aside from the “prisoner/militia city” part which was pretty obviously stolen from Arkham. I also feel like it will be harder to raise the stakes is future installments.

The combat left a lot to be desired although I never really mastered it. Gadgets were completely useless and I never used them unless it was some bonus objective.

Boss fights were way too easy and simpler than most thug encounters. I don’t know if I died once to any of them on medium difficulty.

I didn’t like the circuit challenges or Mary Jane missions and Miles Morales didn’t need to be in the game. QTEs were infrequent enough that they didn’t really matter.

The side missions were all pretty lame that I played but there might be some better ones that I overlooked. I pretty much stuck to the main story after I realized they were all “catch the pigeons/cure the fish/find the cats through a telescope”.

I also kind of wish there were more diverse random encounters. I’m not asking for a bunch of floating balloons and sinking boats but it just seemed like they were all “beat up the robbers”.

This sounds negative but everybody and their mother has already explained what’s good about the game. I think there could be some major improvements to compare to the Arkham games personally. I’m working on my second play through on hard mode so I might be able to refine my analysis a bit.

Pretty much already been said but when stuff like this comes up, I just assume the company expects their reputation to boost from the outrage of the few. Not that I feel very strongly about the Kaepernick controversy in general.

leave YouTube to their devices and then maybe everybody will move to twitch and YT can die.
Normies aren't going to stop using YouTube, and it's normies that ultimately dictate what platforms are the most prominent and where the majority of content creators are going to be.
cringe

Alex Jones is free to make his own website and upload videos there. I'm sure his cult will go watch him.
Okay? I'm not taking about Jones anymore.

I'm talking about alternative platforms becoming viable for large creators. Until your average person starts using them, most creators will continue to use mainstream sites like YouTube. I wouldn't expect people to uproot their followers by moving to another platform and risk losing a huge number of them for the sake of using a more free and open platform.
These websites aren’t as untocheable as you guys are making them out to be. I wouldn’t be surprised if the large majority of content creators aren’t at least very irritated with YT these days.

YouTube (And all other big tech sites for that matter) should be regulated as utilities and thus beholden to the US Constitution because Google is a US based firm and is currently the main platform for people to air their political grievances. Nobody should be kicked off unless they are doing something explicitly illegal.
Come on man, this is ridiculous.

Don’t see why this wasn’t done earlier unless Google’s just testing the waters to do this to other right-wing channels.
