Gaming / Re: Rape day - removed from Steam
« on: March 08, 2019, 10:05:28 AM »
Partly due to conditioning, partly due to the era we live it.

For the most part, rape has never been an aspect of mainstream games, whereas mass murder has been a part of games for years now (which drew controversy in the 00s). This can also be observed in other mediums, such as the original Psycho drawing criticism for showing an unmarried couple in the same bed and that woman in her bra, but by the sequels this was no longer taboo.

It’s also worth mentioning that the era of “#MeToo” and frequent school shootings is not the time to be setting these precedents. Would Infinity Ward have been able to get away with “No Russian” right after 9/11? Probably not. Regardless, a game about a school shooter seems in poor taste even if it wasn’t such a common tragedy as it is.

The fact that the outrage is coming from younger millennials rather than older conservatives likely also is what swayed valve. I think they recognize the hypocrisy though, which is why they seemed encouraging to the developers in their message.

I would also like to bring attention to the fact that Wookie changed his profile from "deleted", posted this, and then changed back again.

Wasn't there a report a few weeks back saying the investigation was pretty much over and that there was no good evidence of collusion?
Just the senate's investigation which isn't as extensive as Mueller's.

A lot to unpack here. Republicans seemed to focus on his lack of credibility but his statements seem believable to me.

What an interesting take away from these articles you have found yourself with. Thank you for the sources.
You seem unsatisfied. When the original comparison was between two countries with similar costs of living and an average income that's actually higher in America, and yet Belgium is statistically better equip to deal with emergency spending by a factor of 3, I'm not sure how it's such a leap to say the the problem might be cultural.

I'm pretty frugal, so I'm usually sitting on enough money to take care of situations like this. The worst experience I can think of was when my car got impounded when I was 19 and jobless. I took a hit, but I was able to take care of it.

At this point, I could easily pay off $1000 if it was absolutely necessary and hopefully will be able to for the rest of my life. I wouldn't be able to if it was $5000-$10000 but I think it'd be pretty unlikely to be in that situation. If I was falling on hard times and had to pay $700 for something like registration, I'd be looking for alternative solutions like uber or moving out of that bullshit state.

The problem, to my understanding, is that Americans are a lot worse with their finances compared to other countries which leads to that discrepancy.

not a fan of the characters though, they're all pretty lame. I just play as the robot
agreed. the healer and mirage are the only ones i've found useful. the gas guy seems pretty good too but i haven't unlocked him.

i'm hoping they experiment a bit, like fortnite, to make the characters better.
For me it's less the abilities and more so the personalities and appearance. Barring the robot none of them look all that cool to me. As for their personalities, it feels as though in trying to make them cool or entertaining, they made them kind of boring. Then again I'm also not a fan of most hero-based games, because they try too hard to make the characters wacky, and they usually attract fans who won't shut up about shipping and other garbage (see: overwatch).

Apex isn't near as bad in that dept. though, it just feels a little uninspired.
There definitely is some really forced tokenism that seems to have been their main priority. Apparently they've stated that the Hawaiian guy is gay and Bloodhound is trans.

I thought it was wack.

It almost feels like the movie was filmed to be more comedic or heavy-hitting and then they chose to edit a lot of it out for some reason.

YouTube

It doesn't really give you as much to think about as they intended.

Ironically he ends with a guy saying "it was all facts" but it begins with a disclaimer saying how hard it was to get facts and they "did the best they fucking could". Most of the scenes felt very fan-fiction-y and more major events like the Iraq War are glossed over. There's literally a screen of text that tells you Cheney profited from the war, but doesn't even bother to explain how.

Yes, and it seems like a fair amount of the voter base is against him as well.

I lost control a couple weeks ago on the highway, during a snowstorm. Slid right across the median, almost into an oncoming semi. Luckily nothing was damaged except my muffler.
