The Flood / Re: The 2023 Box Office« on: December 04, 2023, 06:37:19 PM »
In regard to the box office, it definitely feels like nature is healing to some extent. It's good to see studios getting punished for how uninspired/lazy they've become. Coasting off of beloved IP is basically the one trick studios like Disney have any more. It'll be interesting to see if they can course correct or if the bubble is truly popped.
Believe it or not the following are all the movies I saw in the theater this year (not counting any from streaming or rental). May be forgetting a few, but there’s already too many as is. Godzilla Minus One: Never got around to watching Shin Godzilla (seemed weird to me), so I really appreciated a grounded Godzilla story, closer to the original. The WWII setting was a nice touch to retain the allegory. Wasn’t quite a slam dunk for me. I feel like I have trouble with Japanese media, such as anime. Some of the overacting got a bit goofy, especially with people in the audience laughing. 7/10 Napoleon: I probably will need to see this one again, if I ever feel like it, to fully articulate my thoughts. The movie falls into the trap of a lot of biographical films, where it just feels like a highlight reel without much of a compelling narrative. I’ve also heard that it’s not very historically accurate, so I didn’t get much out of this film. The choice to make the overall plot largely around his relationship with Josephine seemed strange to me. 6/10 The Marvels: I didn’t really have a problem with this film, compared to half the content Marvel has been hemorrhaging out lately. I thought the entanglement element was fun, but they lost the plot a bit in the second half. I’m also tired of the over-reliance on macguffins. Not sure anybody cares but I’ll avoid spoilers. Wasn’t surprised to see this one bomb. 5.5/10 Killers of the Flower Moon: Tried to go into this one blind, so I was caught off-guard with how depressing it was. We caught a pretty late showing and I was nodding through the last hour. Would like to see it again before rating. The Creator: Solid, original sci-fi. 7/10 Talk to Me: Didn’t particularly scare me, but really enjoyed it. 8/10 Oppenheimer: Nolan at his best. I’ve seen it twice, and think I enjoyed it more the second time. 10/10 Barbie: Think I mentioned this in another thread, but when we left the theater my roommates were ludicrously upset with this film, and that may have skewed my perception a bit. Still thought it was well-made, but I didn’t get much out of it, and not sure if I’d see it again. 6.5/10 Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One: I didn’t like how they chose to [redacted] and basically replace them with [redacted]. Other than that, the movie still felt like a step down from previous entries, which is still pretty good. 6/10 Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: The gonzo ending is the only thing giving this film merit. 5/10 The Flash: I was thoroughly enjoying the movie until they introduce the annoying ass Barry. Movie has other problems that I’m sure everyone is already aware of. 6/10 Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse: Good movie, but kind of overshadowed by the original for me. Also not crazy about all the “tune in next time”, cliffhanger endings. 7/10 Fast X: Barely remember what happens but I remember not liking it. Do remember it having the worst cliffhanger ending on this list. 4/10 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: I’d like to see this one again, because I liked it, but not as much as everyone else seemed to. 7/10 Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: This hit the mark, mainly due to the cast, but was kind of bland/forgettable otherwise. 6/10 John Wick: Chapter 4: Never felt like this series was “my thing”, but maybe I was just in the right mindset for this one. Some of the action scenes could really drag, but overall I think it’s my favorite entry. Hope they end it here. 7.5/10 Creed III: I’m a sucker for fighting movies, so this score may be inflated. Better than the last one, but not as good as the first Creed. Jonathan Majors elevates it a bit. 7/10 Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Contender for the worst MCU movie. Plot was as bland as it gets for one of these. Every actor, aside from Rudd and Majors, delivers their lines so flat, like they were just filmed in a room by themself surrounded by green screen. Having your new main villain get killed by Ant Man in his first movie was a wild choice. 3/10 Knock at the Cabin: There’s nothing more interesting that happens in this movie beyond what’s shown in the trailer. 4/10 Missing: I was enjoying the film but the plot got pretty convoluted/unbelievable. 6/10 M3GAN: Fun but dumb. 5/10 33

Seeing Oppenheimer Saturday. Was far more excited for this one.
Just saw Barbie though. Thought it was alright, but the roommates were very upset with this film. Expect this one to be very “controversial” in the coming days. Watch this space. 42

Can’t say I’ve ever really understood the concept of “drinking the pain away”. I feel like alcohol just sort of enhances what you’re already feeling, and then the next morning will just be miserable.
My advice would be find a more healthy way to deal with this, if possible. 57

obviously concerning that key positions Trump tried to exploit in 2020 will most likely be held by election "truthers" 60
