When I first saw the thread title, I thought this was going to piss me off but after reading JJ's words on the matter it makes a lot of sense. There's a lot of truth in what he's saying and I think he's handling it pretty well.
Not only is it important for minorities to be represented, but to be represented well. Strong characters and strong performances is what gets the Oscar buzz, and I don't know that these white-male filmmakers are really getting that. JJ himself decided to have a female and an African American leads in his movie and I thought they were both very weak. He's now talking about how Episode VIII will have the first openly gay character, which isn't that impressive if it's the only character trait they have. If we're just casting diversity to fulfill some abstract quota, and they're not good characters then it defeats the purpose. Minority filmmakers might do better at working with these actors and characters.
