Even if that were the case, being able to control one's environment to whatever degree still can't mitigate the quite serious physical defects of people. I mean, it's not that psychopaths are evil per se, there's just an emotional deficit which prevents empathy. You really can't mitigate that.
I don't necessarily believe that it is 100% certain a psychopath would have become one without question due to their conditioning at birth. I do believe that a person's upbringing has a significant effect on a person's conditioning when they have developed. The nature of that effect is very complex and isn't exactly straight forward. IE: Maybe a psychopath was treated with love and care throughout his childhood but still managed to become one. Basically I believe the ego does as it is conditioned to do. If the effect of that conditioning at birth is so strong that it can't be negated by the conditioning of a person's upbringing then that is what will happen. A person with Down's Syndrome can't influence themselves out of Down's Syndrome, obviously. But I do believe that people have some degree of control over their conditioning.

I actually do believe that people have some degree of control over what kind of personality they have, they just have to recognize what influences their personality and act according to what will influence them in the manner that they wish.
The first issue with this is that you can't change what has already happened, thus having certain genes, disorders, birth defects etc. is out of your control. But you can theoretically control how you are influenced by your environment by putting yourself into one of your choosing. (I say theoretically because the opportunity to put yourself into the environment of your choosing doesn't exactly present itself to everyone.)
The second issue is that the vast majority of people do not recognize this when they are developing and thus never act according to it in the most influential time of their life.

Debatable, obviously. Not really. The only way you can defend free will in the face of certain neuroscientific findings is to dilute the original, metaphysical meaning of the term. Free will, as referenced to unhindered agency--being the conscious author of one's own thoughts and desires--isn't really a defensible position anymore.
Essentially you treat the ego like an algorithm. The nature of which can be theoretically predicted with certainty. I'm not so sure I agree. I won't form any solid conclusive opinions on the matter as I can still recognize my own ignorance. Of course we can take away the momentum of these beliefs, but only with significant effort. We can take away the momentum of our own personal beliefs, correct? Yes it's very difficult, but the possibility remains. And so long as it remains, I know that a person could go against their expected and predictable nature. They probably won't. In fact, they almost certainly won't most of the time, but they still can. And the fact that they can proves to myself that the power that predicable nature had over them is not absolute. Otherwise the possibility to go against it would never arise.

Debatable, obviously. But, in a sense, yes, religion does supersede our autonomy to act in certain manners. If you believe a certain proposition to be true (religious or not) then your belief will necessarily motivate you to act in a certain way.
So you're telling me that something created by sentient life, something that we give power to, has more power than us now? That we can give beliefs momentum in our minds but we can't take it away? That's a strange way to look at things. I'm sorry I just can't believe that something that would not even exist if we weren't here to conceive it has absolute power over us. I won't go into this any further since it'll turn this into a debate on whether or not choice actually exists, and that isn't what your thread is about.

Islam may influence a person to a very significant degree but, in the end, it still up to that person to decide what actions they will take and the life that they will lead. Or are you saying that religion supersedes free will? Those men may have decided to shoot up 12 people in the name of Islam, but they didn't have to do it. They weren't forced to do it. Islam is a very influential religion but it only has as much power over people as they themselves give it. No set of beliefs is any different, really. I mean, for a belief to have absolute objective power over someone like that. . . What would it have existed since the dawn of time? Is it a physical law? I just wouldn't make any sense to me. Sorry, I'm rambling.
