-Finished school day
-Oh damn man I have a quiz, better get home fast -Wait what -Light snow -Stand at bus stop -A good 200+ people waiting as well -Well this next bus is going to be packed -Waiting -Waiting -Snow intensifying -Waiting -OMG BUS THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU -Well this isn't actually my bus, but I suppose I can make my way home from it considering my regular bus has probably evaporated -Bus moving at like 1 cm/decade -Eventually we stop like 10 minutes from the university -Lol guys we're stuck, time to go -In the middle of nowhere -Walk like 20 minutes to a central bus terminal in what seems to be the North Pole making its entrance in here -Wait around 45 minutes for my regular bus -Bus shows up -As we move through the snow, we find LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE BUS GOING TO/FROM THE UNIVERSITY broken down -Get off 2 kilometers away from home -Am probably somewhere in Antarctica now -Get home in raging snow -Time elapsed: 4 hours, 9:15PM -Text friend over in a far away city with "4 hour snow commute" -She replies with a blank image -"that image is blank btw" -"Yes, it's an accurate image of the bus stop I'm waiting at" CANADA EEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 65

Serious / True randomness: Does it exist?« on: November 16, 2014, 10:50:06 PM »
T4R
Dusty's thread got me thinking about the subject again. I recall Turkey bringing it up a while ago, and I then dismissed it [and agreed with him] by saying that true randomness does exist. At this time I was a monumental moron, so I was conflating true randomness with unpredictability. Soon after I read some of Gregory Chaitin's works and I was convinced of the exact opposite conclusion. Now that I'm rethinking all of this, I'm genuinely undecided. Whaddaya think? Does true randomness [distinct from unpredictabilitychaos, remember!] exist from a mathematical POV? 67

Say we have two glasses. Let's call one of them A, and the other B. A has x mL of water [x∈R| x≥1]. B has x mL of soda. Got it? Now all that I'm going to do is take one mL of water from A and put it in B. Then I stir it until it mixes uniformly. I decide to backpedal a bit, and attempt to remove one mL of liquid from B and put it back in A. Of course, this is silly because the glasses' contents obviously aren't the same as before!
Question: What in particular can you notice in particular about the amount of contents of A and B at the end? 69

You can track it down on XBL/Xbox Video.
Currently watching Marty reminisce about how he created the Halo chant in 30 minutes. Old stuff, but it's great to see him and Staten back and talking about Halo again. Spoiler I'm still rustled that Bungie fired him 71
Serious / Bravo Nolan« on: October 30, 2014, 06:45:24 PM »YouTube Yes, yes, I Banepost and all, but the point being made in this video is something I, in general, feel fairly strongly about with regards to this fear of technology and this belief that expanding into horizons past, well, our own is just a bunch of idealistic nonsense. I think it's something most of us here agree with actually... which is kinda surprising. Usually there's always one sect of dedicated people who are strictly anti space tech on almost every forum I go to. So I suppose this post actually has no point but to show this video and give me a means to say that I love you all to death, but I could have done that anywhere. Why am I still typing? 74

Serious / Math Whining Thread« on: October 02, 2014, 05:50:59 PM »*cue 30 minute quiz* *skim over questions* "Lol, I got this" *There's only one at the beginning that seems like it will take over 50 seconds so I leave it until the end* *24 minutes left* "K back to that question" *It's about bounds* "Lmao this will take 10 seconds max" "Given f and g are bounded, provide a rigorous proof for why f-g+fg is bounded as well" 23 minutes later *used triangle ineq once* *at the point where |f-g+fg|<=|f-g|+|fg|<=[blank]+MN* *have been at this point for 23 minutes and 50 seconds* *like 30 seconds left* *writes "therefore y=|x|+sqrt(1-x^2) and y=|x|-sqrt(1-x^2)"* *exit quiz* And that is the story of how BOUNDS managed to screw me over on a test about FIELDS Real question: holy sh1t what is the goddamn proof for the question I hate getting proofs wrong because when I finally figure it out I see that the solution was usually right in front of my face the entire time. I'm fairly certain the proof takes like 2 seconds but I wasn't able to figure it out. Google says nothing, and everyone I've asked in the class either didn't answer it or they realized that they answered it wrong after a few minutes of discussion. 80
