As someone who worked on CoD - I can confirm, they DO take three years a pop. Since you want to be a smartass explain to me why CoD games have shipped with less content, polish, and stability in a "3 year development" cycle than the ones that were made before it that were on the 360 and PS3 that took less time to make.
Just because they found traces of IW in the WW2 code, just means that they are not stupid enough to throw out an engine and write a fresh one. Yes they are. Activision are greedy fucks and they want to make up all the money they lost with IW. It's clear that they run these developers with an iron fist. If Advanced Warfare 2 was made and just released, they wouldn't even come close to what they made from WW2 sales and supply drops.
Objects are not deleted because some thing depend on the object count. To save time, they might remove the asset but keep the reference. Going through every routine to check what it (and how many) things it expects would take a lot of time.
3 years is plenty of time to create a game, test play it, and fix any bug or anything else wrong with it before it is released. WW2 is a game that was just put together in half a year to make a quick buck and lacks the soul, creativity, immersion, and everything else that World at War features nearly 10 years ago.
I can explain it all. Just not enough time to write the whole story. TL;DW: A lot of stuff is outsourced - so making sure there is equal polish across CP / MP and ZM is difficult. The CP team already starts making up the story for the next game pretty much right after the current one is done and that across every department. Everyone is constantly working. In the final 6 months before release, all focus goes to the current game. The reason previous games had more polish can be explained by two things: 1) Increased outsource. A lot is still in-house, but some things were outsourced. ZM is done by Raven. God bless their souls. 2) The code-base is updated. A lot more complexity in this one. A team that brings in big bank, they really could afford to hire more. I can vouch for the team though. The boys and girls there work their asses off and any short-comings can be explained by unrealistic demands from the suits. The can hire more staff to ease crunch time, but why spend money when you can just voluntary make your employees work basically 16 hours a day? The crunch time was so morbid. Walking past office and the people there struggling to stay awake. Hire more staff ffs. College kids would work for literal bread, just to get some experience. Who am I kidding, they can afford to pay everyone over 50k, easy but they don't.

It's made by Sledgehammer, they are incompetent and flat out retarded when it comes to making CoD games. Don't let the WWII-theme fool you because this game is hands down one of the WORST CoD games ever made.
And stop believing the "3 year development" lies that Activision says because WW2 was datamined and people found exo suits and advanced movement in the game's code. This leads to the speculation that this game was developed in an extremely short amount of time after the backlash that IW got. It all adds up because the game is horrendously buggy and extremely lacks polish in all areas. Advanced Warfare 2 was rumored to already be in development at the time of IW's pre release and post release.
Activison knew that people are sick of the future stuff and slapped this clusterfuck of a game to try and make up all the money they lost with IW.
I played the game for 2 weeks and stopped because of how bad it is and I'm not gonna wait for any fixes because the damage has already been done.
World at War is nearly 10 years old and the fact that a game that old is better in every single category than the new one that has the same setting is embarrassing.
