If you are certain 2 + 2 = 4, then yes.

Fucking do it.

Are you certain the laws of physics are correct, even if not complete?

4144
Well Meta, are you certain that 2 + 2 = 4?

4145
It's a historical philosophy class so the majority of what we're learning is wrong anyway.

Just took my math midterm, I think I did well.

Does it really matter what kind of god it is? The point is that any kind of omnipresent, omniscient, or omnipotent being cannot exist if the laws of physics are to be correct.

4148
WARNING THIS IS WHAT CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY BELIEVE

Let me tell you an actual story in the bible. There was a war between Israel and some other kind of sand people, so the Israeli general asked god to stop the time so he could rally his troops from the battle he was losing. So god stopped time and the Israelis killed the enemy while they were frozen in time.

Point is, among other countless examples, the actions of god portrayed in religious texts defy the laws of physics, and therefore cannot be true. The idea of any omnipotent or omniscient being is simply impossible. So to say that you cannot have 100% certainty that supernaturalism can't be real is bit of a rash claim, is it not? (sorry for triple negative in that last sentence)

For giving us the opportunity to print threads. No really, it's a great feature, seriously. I've always wanted to print threads and now we can.

Someone should do a review on How to Get Away With Murder, which is this awesome TV show that just came out. I hate writing reviews so I'm not going to do it, but it's an idea for anyone else.

Serious / Is marijuana a gateway drug?
« on: October 08, 2014, 04:52:12 AM »
The argument is that because people who do harder drugs (like cocaine and heroin) overwhelmingly have a history of consuming marijuana, that consuming marijuana leads to the increased likelihood of doing harder drugs. Others argue that it's a correlation-causation logical fallacy, they say that just because hard drug users consume marijuana, doesn't mean that marijuana users have any temptation to do harder drugs.

You could also make the argument for alcohol and cigarettes, which are both common among hard drug users, just as marijuana is. Does consuming alcohol and cigarettes increase one's temptation to do harder drugs? And if so, shouldn't they be illegal just as marijuana is?

Even though I despite democracy and think that a meritocracy would run things much better, if you have to have elected officials it might be best if they're not so gridlocked that you can actually get things done.

Maybe instead of rewarding people for spamming threads and posts, reward them for the amount of likes they receive and that should help get people to create more quality material as opposed to just spam.

You'll just have to fix the infinite like glitch and we'll be good.

China's doing exceptionally well at the moment by combining civil and economic freedoms. The lack of political freedom makes it easier for the government to respond to the people.

However, Western democracies are overwhelmingly conservative in their nature for the very reason of stopping big, overly-effective governments. One wrong move by the Chinese and it all comes tumbling down.
Plus the fact that most of China's policies aren't sustainable.

I once watched a TED Talk video on how conscious manifests itself in every spec of matter, and the more complex you are, the more consciousness you have.

Yeah it's not always quality.

Serious / Does education do a good enough job teaching...
« on: October 08, 2014, 01:33:33 AM »
I watched this TED Talk video a very long time ago that I've been thinking about. It was about a young boy who was very intelligent, but no one knew it because he was autistic and he wouldn't give clear answers to the teacher's questions. So the school put him in the special education class, and he ended up not being taught anything there. But what it did do is it forced him to think for himself and to teach himself things. Eventually the schooled wised up and realized that he was actually a mathematical genius, but he claims that if he weren't placed in the special education class where he stopped learning, he wouldn't be as intelligent as he is today.

The point is, learning to think for yourself and to create your own knowledge is a very valuable skill. But is our education system allowing children to do that? I honestly can't say for elementary school because I really don't remember what was going on in my head at that time, but I know that in college you're just bombarded with so much information and you're not usually taught the meaning behind it. If you're an intuitive learner, you have to rely on understanding the meaning behind concepts before you can really apply them to anything, and that's especially apparent in math.

Ehh I probably shouldn't spend too much time on this post because I only have a few hours left to study for this test, but I think you guys get the idea.
