I'd rather live in a society where people work hard due to cultural conditioning/interest/good-samaritanism rather than an ambition to make money. We don't have to have equal wages but it'd be nice if there was a standard of living. And there'd still be competition, just not in competition for money. Rather, people would compete for a more comfortable, interesting job. The only poor you'd have are those who get fired from their jobs (for being lazy or whatever). And yeah, the government would manage this entire system. I understand the usual counter argument--that governments don't manage supply and demand well empirically speaking, but that's not actually true. There's never been a single, non-impoverished state who's ever tried a command economy. Though there have been plenty of impoverished states who've tried decentralization and they're not better off. Clearly, the main variable in the growth of an economy is scientific innovation (also production but that's not the point), not the collective individual motivation to accumulate more money. People can still work hard if they're just conditioned to (or because they love their job).

tl;dr: Point is, we don't have to force ourselves into a more miserable existence so that a small percentage of us can live lavishly. We can have functioning economies without the accumulation of money being the driver behind it.

And it's not like that utopia you guys dream about is going to be a reality in the next twenty years. I mean that's just ridiculously, unrealistically optimistic. Let's say you actually have a realistic time frame for that 'eventuality,' say 150 years in the future, it's still not going to happen. Why in the hell would the people in power give up all their money to a bunch of unemployed people? They have that money because they're not good-samaritians; because their ruthless; because their primary concern is the accumulation of money and not charity. People are going to fight each other for jobs that pay pennies a day, that's what's going to happen. No one's going give anyone free money, even if they have enough of it to go around. Selfishness and ruthless are the mentalities that the capitalist system favored that put those people in that position, so for them to just magically change their minds and decide that they're just going to give up all their money one day is batshit insane and irritatingly retarded.

I've been reading Adam Smith lately who was the first person to popularize the theory back before the American and French revolutions. I just found it interesting how so much of what he theorized had absolutely nothing to do with our modern economy. My favorite example is human labor. Smith said that as demand for labor increased, wages increased, and that allowed people to raise more children into adulthood, due to the very high mortality rate back ~250 years ago. As more children would survive until adulthood, the supply of labor would increase and wages would fall down again. Capitalism originally relied on the mass deaths of children, pretty spooky stuff if you ask me.

And there are many other processes that Smith wasn't aware of at his time, processes that haven't let capitalism become dysfunctional, but rather highly inefficient. Letting the market function as naturally as possible isn't the best way to bring about competition, and thus human flourishing. Rather, letting the market run as competitively as possible is the best way. The government should function as the independent variable, and ultimately take responsibility for the well being of the economy. But unfortunately the government doesn't work to increase competition wherever possible. And that's because businesses essentially run the government, and use it to shield themselves from competition. And alas, the natural route isn't the most competitive route. And if the founding fathers were aware of this distinction, we would live in a much better world today.
