Environmentalism is about preserving the environment for ethical/moral reasons. I'm more concerned about preserving it for economic reasons.

I'm reporting both your posts for derailing this thread and arguing at each other. The more you continue to do this, the worse off you'll both be.

I was going to make a troll thread about that until you ruined it with this thread. Good job.

Why is this in serious anyway?

>tfw when you only applied to UConn and you got in. I don't advise trying that kids. One of the few times I've actually gotten lucky in my life.
I did the same, but I applied on the last day and accidentally omitted the 'activities' section. Well I guess that goes to show how unimportant that actually is compared to how important everyone says it is.

Should I feel good about myself for unintentionally making people feel smarter than they actually are by making an inside joke I knew they wouldn't understand, or am I pushing them towards a less prepared state in life by deluding them to think they are smarter than they actually are (which is okay, being that this is a capitalist society)?

I honestly do not like how I can justify either scenario.

You're right, I misspoke. I meant to say "there hasn't been an incident of theft, leakage, or loss of spent fuel rods in America in-transit to disposal since modern regulations (the past 30ish years) were implemented." I was addressing a common fear that it's dangerous to truck nuclear fuel away from a power plant, or that it's susceptible to theft by terrorist or otherwise criminal organizations. I used a shorthand that normally works for the people I talk with about this that would understand what I meant, and I should have been more clear.

What do you want a citation for? That spent fuel rods are encased in steel or concrete then buried?
I was not asking you to Google it, I'm asking you which organizations are you getting this information from.

Do you even understand the science here? You can't block radiation with steel and concrete. Their chemical strength is entirely irrelevant, the issue is of atomic density. If you know anything about the size and scale of an atom, then you'll know using concrete to block radiation is like taking a golf ball, placing it in the middle of a football field, and expecting a marble that you throw at the football field to be deflected by the golf ball. If you want to make nuclear radiation "safe," you'll have to isolate it i.e. the variable of distance. As we can see empirically, people who live around nuclear reactors, nuclear waste sites, and anywhere in between have higher rates of cancer. (You see how I did that? I actually linked you to the source I used.)

Is it not obvious that steel and concrete are only used to sound safe to the uneducated individual? Scientifically speaking, that'll do nothing to protect you. So again, where exactly do get your information that steel and concrete can safely protect you from radiation? Is it a scientific source or is it a corporate source?

I'm not trying to support one political side or the other, I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. There's no need for all the added patronization.

Or rather, nuclear waste is only easy to dispose of if done improperly, which the United States currently does, so yeah I guess I could give you that it's "easy" to dispose of.

Please do educate me, O Wise One, on the proper method of disposing of nuclear waste.

A caveat to your response is that there has never been an incident of theft, leakage, or loss of spent fuel rods in America. It's also fairly simple to dispose of: encase it in steel and concrete, then bury it in the ground.
A number of things:

1. Are you offended right now or is there some other pressing need to not just state the argument and rebuttal in your reply?

2. What you said was just inherently wrong. There's countless nuclear waste spills across the country. Read up.

"As the largest environmental cleanup program in the world, EM has been charged with the responsibility of cleaning up 107 sites across the country whose area is equal to the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware."

3. I'm not an expert on nuclear physics, meaning there comes a point where I have to choose which source I'm going to listen to. In the sense that garbage incineration isn't actually an environmentally safe procedure as it's often claimed to be, the same generally goes for nuclear power. And seeing as all you've done is ramble about how safe it is without providing any sources to your information, and seeing part of your knowledge on nuclear power and nuclear waste is wrong, I can't simply take your word without knowing which organizations you get your information from.

For starters, there's risk of a meltdown, the process produces hard-to-dispose-of nuclear waste and throws out highly lethal radiation at all times. Fusion, by comparison, is a lot less dangerous

dat blatant misinformation propagated by the media tho
That's literally how fission works though. It's not this magical energy source with no drawbacks.

The drawbacks are minimal. Current reactors are very safe and reliable. Risk of a meltdown is basically zero (for perspective, the reactors in Fukushima were shitty and poorly regulated and it took a massive tsunami and earthquake to cause a meltdown). Nuclear waste isn't difficult to dispose of, and while the reactors do emit radiation, shielding is very easy (water alone blocks almost all of it) and there are zero cases of dangerous dosage of radiation in modern power plants.

You're right, nuclear power isn't magical. It's also not scary. You take a really heavy metal, you shoot a neutron at it so that it releases some of the metal's binding energy, you allow that energy to heat up some water, use that water to boil some other water, and then you let the steam drive a generator shaft. It's self-sustaining, has an abundant fuel source, and doesn't involve blowing up million-year-old algea.
Or rather, nuclear waste is only easy to dispose of if done improperly, which the United States currently does, so yeah I guess I could give you that it's "easy" to dispose of.

« on: October 17, 2014, 11:08:37 PM »
Sorry Dustin.

It looks like no one is down for this. I tried.
I have the money to pay for something like that myself, but I don't think it would be fun if I went by myself.

If I could (I'd have to find a sitter for two days) I would get my friends together and we would meet you. Hell, it's only a 5 hour drive from my house.

But I think it would be weird for a recently separated almost 40 year old to be meeting a 18 year old in Vegas to party...

Stories get started that way.
You're definitely going to be the kind of grandparent that can keep your kids entertained for hours with your stories.
