Your guilt has been determined this is merely a sentencing hearing.

Now what will it be? Death or exile?

Guys, this is Dustin we're talking about.

Spoiler

I'll just let Glenn Greenwald explain to everyone why this is bullshit:
Quote
"...the people that say that, that privacy isn't really important, they don't actually believe it. And the way that you know that they don't actually believe it, is that while they say with their words "privacy doesn't matter," with their actions they take all kinds of steps to safeguard their privacy. They put passwords on their email and their social media accounts, they put locks on their bedroom and bathroom doors. All steps designed to prevent other people from entering what they consider their private realm and knowing what it is that they don't want other people to know."
Quote
"The reason is that when were in a state where we can be monitored or can be watched, our behavior changes dramatically. ...Mass surveillance creates a prison in the mind that is a much more subtle, though much more effective, means of fostering compliance with social norms or with social orthodoxy, and is much more effective than brute force could ever be."
Those are just ideological arguments. They're just not practical or applicable to anything. It would be nice if we didn't have any poverty, but distributing out the wealth is only going to ruin the economy. It would be nice if we didn't have death panels in hospitals, but you have to prioritize patients and save the children before the old people.

Don't like the feeling of being watched? Get used to it. This is possibly the most effective tool to combat terrorism and if you were aware of the threats that are being prevented because of the monitoring you wouldn't be so uncomfortable right now.

Serious / First contact
« on: November 17, 2014, 09:25:25 AM »
Say an alien race makes contact with the government. Is the government obligated to tell the public that they have just discovered an alien race? And if this were to really happen, do you think the government would tell the public about their discovery or not?

Personally I don't think they should be obligated to tell us. If there is any pressing reason why you should know, say because you work for NASA, then you will be informed, but otherwise they are a taking a huge risk just to tell you something you don't even have to know.

And what I actually think the government would do? They'd probably tell us. Not right away of course, but they'd want to make sure they deliver the information to the public properly to minimize as much risk as possible.

You don't have to be religious to participate in this thread. Just say what you think is the strongest argument for God even if you don't personally find it convincing.

Spoiler
I am definitely not collecting pro-God arguments or anything here

Can that bitch just die from a heart attack already? I fucking hate her so damn much; Obama is more sane than that psycho
You sure have a lot of hate in your heart. How come people are unable to disagree with someone without wanting them dead?

I didn't like Bush, but I never wished death upon him.

Grow up.
Were you not the one who made a thread about how you don't listen to certain musicians who were religious?

I'm not an attention whore so I really don't give a damn.
What does this have anything to do with attention whoring? We're not talking about special titles and nameplates.

Anybody who trusts the government that much is a fucking sperglord.
You can pretty much apply that to any government agency or program. "I don't agree with x because I don't trust them." If this is simply a matter of trust then there's no real logical argument to be had.

I've mentioned before how almost half the people on the U.S.'s watch-list aren't connected to terrorism, and how the government has collected porn habits in order to discredit radicals, and both times you came up with facetious answers.
Because these arguments could be used for both sides. I actually see it as an accomplishment that they've narrowed down the list of suspects so far that one in two of the people on the list are connected to terrorism. The second argument is just the same, I see it as a strong intelligence and counterterrorism tactic. The implication goes no further than to say they wouldn't turn a blind eye to look at your porn habits if you've done something illegal.

This thread does not apply to people like Casper, Os, and probably Slash lol.

Doesn't apply to people so fat their bones disappear either.

So yeah, where is it? For most people it's either your thighs or your stomach.

« on: November 16, 2014, 09:37:35 PM »
"Please, just let me watch child terrorist porn while hacking into Target and creating Trojan Horse viruses to install on as many innocent victim's computers as possible."

I've still yet to hear a decent rebuttal to the argument as to why you're worried about the NSA if you have nothing to hide. Stupid ideological answers like 'but that's a violation of privacy' I do not take seriously.

The Flood / Re: How would you rank your relative intelligence on Septagon?
« on: November 16, 2014, 09:32:45 PM »
Depends on the category. Everybody's got credentials in their own respective manner. That's how intelligence works. Some are better than other people in certain areas. But they aren't "better" or above the rest overall.

I'm shitty in math, I'm no psychologist or doctor, I can write semi-decently, but I've got something. I drop myself off in the above category because I'm a laborer.

You want simple, grounded, down to earth views that so many overlook? Ask the guy with the hardhat. You'll have to pay me extra though. "I don't get paid to think boss."
Stop being that annoying 'everyone gets a trophy' liberal and just identify someone as an idiot or not one.

« on: November 16, 2014, 08:30:08 PM »
You might say millions of years or you might say ten. The question is way too open ended for any of our answers to have any meaningful trend. But my best guess would be 350 years or so. It shouldn't take too long for a virus to kill us all off.
