I hear people toss this around all the time. "Oh thats more of a movie than a game.." Or what ever. What defines a Game for you? What defines an Interactive Movie?

Would you use that as a derpgstory term? "Interactive movie"

1. Gameplay to movie/cutscene ratio
Example: MGS4
2. worldspace to freedom of movement ratio AKA Corridor syndrome
Example: Most modern/near future FPS titles. Homefront, battlefield 4 & 3 etc.

...I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

What defines an Interactive Movie?
Time Gal, Dragon's Lair and Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.
All three of them have no gameplay to them and what you do is choose what path the character is going to do .Each path you do there's a scene for it.

I don't know but if a "game" is point and click then it isn't really a game

Runescape?

Shit lol, I should have worded it better, but I meant point and click in the sense of telltales style of games.

I was going to say that even stuff like Mist wouldn't qualify. But yeah, I tend to agree that Telltale games aren't really video games in the typical sense. It's not a bad thing, it's just a different experience. Kind of like how the old Goosebumps books aren't really novels.

I would define it as how much control you have over the character during the game. Something like Ryse: Son of Rome would be an interactive movie.

I would say that TellTale Games are more movies than games. Stuff like Beyond Two Souls and The Last of Us are games.
I agree about TLOU but not Beyond. They really are movies with how their interaction and mechanics work.

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
Telltale games are interactive movies. They give freedom in what happens, but there's very little actual 'gameplay'. They can't really be 'lost' in the traditional sense, so they're not really games at all.

...Which I see has been mentioned repeatedly by now. I'd also think the Metal Gear Solid games are more movies than games, seeing as how the cutscenes make up over 2/3 of time spent 'playing'.

They're also not charging you $60 though.

I'm just making the distinction between something like a telltale game and something like say, The Order 1886. One knows it's an interactive movie and doesn't try to hide it. Thus charging significantly less money. The other is an interactive movie and is trying to hide it. Thus you're being charged $60 and the devs are trying to damage control.

Where have you seen enough evidence to validate that the game is 5 hours long?

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.

Someone got a copy and uploaded footage of his playthrough to YouTube. To be fair, it is missing segments (such as the Zeppelin), o "5 hours long" is a bit of an exaggeration. From what we've seen of the 5 hours though, 3.5 were cinematics. Gameplay also looks like a poor-man's Gears of War with not-so-quick time events.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are
Interactive Movies are games that mostly consist of cinematics and the individual has little to no choice over Story.

A salt Rifle
1. A failure state; Game Over/Restart from Last Checkpoint/Implied Failure State (e.g. no story progression)

2. (Complex) Player Input is necessary to avoid failure state (ties in with beforementioned point); if a game quite literally plays itself, it is not able to fulfill requirement 1, as it is virtually impossible to achieve a failure state (example: FF13 early intro combined with auto attack management). That's also why I often see people complaining about Arkham styled combat systems and their godlike counter button.

3. (Implied) Success State; can be highscores, execution of objectives or story progression.

Thus I conclude a game such as Telltale's point&click games as games, while I consider heavy rain an interactive movie.
Why? Heavy rain's death scenes reward the player with a different progression in the story; may it be an undesirable reward doesn't matter. In the end you just alter the results, nothing more.

I'd say it depends a lot on how many choices you are able to make within the game. More than choices that impact the plot, but choices you're able to make between cutscenes/scripted moments.
