Mods are done by third party with software made by the original developer or with custom code mixing in with original code alongside with custom assets mixing in with original assets. In this context the software is games. Modifications can range from changing the bullet prefab to rocket ammo for the assault rifle on Halo, to adding your own content and code into the existing code making sure it doesn't break the original code, as well as adding new assets into the existing assets but giving that asset it's own script that communicates with the rest of the game world.

Mods can have a variety of things, it could just be visual tweaks to make the game look better than it already does.

And the best part is, they're all optional!

And free! Unless it's a company like 343 modding a Bungie title, but that doesn't really count as modding now does it?

Spoiler
I pretty much made this thread to bring mods into a positive light. I don't understand why some people have a blind hate towards it. If you don't like it so much, don't use any of them. Don't tell other people how to play their games. If it's mods used for cheating online, report that. No sane person wants that in any game. Otherwise, it's perfectly fine and perfectly legal, and it's not hurting you.

One of my favorite mods...

Fat Man firing 255 mini nukes in a single shot with 10mm ammo is the best mod ever.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
ugh i miss my modded skyrim

I'd say so. Bethesda just gave PC gamers the tools and support to go apeshit with their game and the results show.
It's been almost 5 years and Skyrim is still making Bethesda dosh due to the modding community and it's consistently in the top 10 most played games for Steam.

Spoiler
Of course modding is terrible and devs that support it don't know what artistic integrity is though.

It was a joke about how mad the modding scene for Skyrim is and how un-Skyrim the game can be with some mods.

Or a rational individual who respects art rather than tarnishes it.

Correct. And your post only proves my point.

And no, modded Skyrim isn't Skyrim anymore.  It's "modded Skyrim".

That's the point.

So? The point of playing video games is to have fun. Mods add more fun once the vanilla game is getting stale.

Or, you could play a different game.

That also implies that most people mod games as soon as vanilla gets stale, and not before they even beat the damn game.
Which is so unbelievably stupid.

Or, you could play a different game.

Why would I do that when the dev gives me the tools and support to change their game to play and look the way I want it to?

Modding also extends a games life time way past what it would originally be and helps support the devs. The Imperial Civil War mod team essentially gave us Empire at War 2 for example and it came at no extra cost to those who already owned the base game and its expansion.

I mean I know you'll never allow your opinion to be changed so this is wasted time and effort and all, but surely you can't deny those facts.

So they gave you a shitty RTS game. Great.

The base EaW is pretty shitty though as it didn't age well. However ICW fixes all of its problems and makes major improvements to the visuals, ai, and game balance while adding more content such as new factions and game systems.

You're such a fucking stick in the mud. I bet you're a lot of fun to hang around with IRL (no not really)

Why would I do that when the dev gives me the tools and support to change their game to play and look the way I want it to?

Because perhaps while he likes playing Skyrim, he wants to tweak it so it doesn't become repetitive,  or see what the modding community has in store, i.e. quests, Loch Wraith form, etc.

Obviously you don't.

If you want to see it improved, why not just wait for the sequel?
And if there's no sequel, or if the sequel sucks, then tough shit?

Personally, I would recommend to stop playing Skyrim, because it's bad.
