For those of you who have it and aren't riddled with salt over the well established problems, can anyone say what the AI is like firsthand?

The fauna not the combat stuff, do they roam around doing the same sort of generic actions on a loop or do they seem to actually do something moderately interesting?

There was a tiger with wings on one of the ice worlds in my system that walked back and forth near me when I was mining gold. It eventually ran towards me and attacked.

There's also this tropical world in my system that has giant spider/crab looking creatures and I noped outta there before I got out of my ship.

From a distance though, do they do anything like an ordinary ecosystem?

Predators hunting prey, family units, herds, travelling from A-B etc?

I haven't spent a great deal of time watching one herd but when I do there is usually a good mix of adult / child versions of the animals. The ratio of each usually depending on how dangerous they are. I've seen predators attack their prey as well... RIP baby Shelled Owot.

The AI is pretty decent as far as I can tell.

Hmm

It's kinda the lure of this game for me, being able to go around and observe weird new forms of life (attenborough childhood ;-;7) the thing that makes me cautious is if the AI is dull and after a few planets they all follow basically the same pathing it'd be a bit of a disappointment.

If that's what you're looking for I'd be a bit wary although it does it better than any other game I've seen....

Mostly because no other game does that sort of thing. lol

Indeed, kinda why I haven't bought it already.

I'll just keep skimming videos for a while, see what i make of it but it's hard to get a glimpse when most people just shoot everything in sight for fun.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
It kinda seems like No Man's Sky suffered from the same problem Spore did; not just in the sense that it offers relatively uninteresting procedurally generated aspects, but in the sense that it thinks offering scope and novelty is enough to hold the attention of people.

For that, you really need narrative.

novelty usually doesn't work on its own unless it's actually where the gameplay is built around (e.g portal) and I wouldn't say they don't offer scope, they just don't fulfill it or make it interesting

it's completely possible for a game to have no story whatsoever and be fun, minecraft for instance, or even track racing games if you want

a story is good but if you have a convincing world with well-rounded gameplay rather than the current gameplay loop which seems to be gather materials from this rock the same way you do with this other rock, and get protection for you suit from the cold/radiation/toxic weather, which people have described pretty much work exactly the same under a different variable name; either wears down your suit the more time you spend exploring on it, and you have to top it up with something to keep yourself alive

really though, maybe I'm misunderstanding your idea of "narrative" or whether the game has enough activities to be able to convince yourself that you can build your own story out of it.

The one real thing that bugged me, and I feel sorry for console users, is the god awful FOV. FOV rarely bothers me, but oh my god it's so bad in default. Unless you can edit it on console, in which case god bless america.

After observing a bit more it appears predators both stalk prey and go in for kills. A giant wolf thing nearly got me like that.

Also I had a run in with a giant shark.

A friend handed me a copy, I have a free copy of a game I'm not interested in, guess I'll give it a go and put it on the 'Games I say I'll go back to, but wont' shelf
