Itโ€™s not the Metroid II players of the original will remember. Project AMR2 has taken the fast-paced gameplay of Metroid: Zero Mission for the Game Boy Advance, mixed it with the atmosphere of Super Metroid and incorporated a bunch of helpful new features:

Metroid Zero Mission style gameplay
Map system
Updated enemy AI
Minibosses
New areas
Challenging Metroid fights
Stackable beam system
Completely redrawn enemy and Metroid sprites
Log system with non-intrusive narrative
High quality soundtrack

Looks pretty great, though I haven't played it. Just watched the YouTube video so far.

It's been in the works for about 9 years iirc, so Nintendo has had ample time to C&D it. You can only assume that, since they've let it release, they must silently approve.

I feel I should try this. Is this the one where the other Samus suit is around and that scary music plays?

I should warn you

I know literally nothing about Metroid minus Zero Suit Samus being dog shit. It was one of the few series I never paid attention to.

Is that the one you'd recommend? I feel I should pull a Verb and give the game a shot (that's where you play something you completely passed up/didn't care for and beat it).

I'd play Super Metroid first, then play Fusion and Zero Mission if you like it.

Super Metroid takes place directly after Metroid II. In Metroid II, the basic plot is that Samus is tasked with killing the last remaining Metroids from the first game in an effort to make them all go extinct (because they have a capacity to fuck the entire galaxy's shit up).

In the end, when there's just one last baby Metroid for her to kill, she chooses to show it mercy, and captures it so she can donate it to science rather than destroy it. Then, in Super Metroid, it gets forcibly taken back by Ridley--and the threat of Metroids mass-reproducing and wreaking havoc all over the galaxy becomes very real again.

It was a consistently excellent and compelling series of games until Other M came out. We don't talk about Other M.

Did Other M more or less kill the series? I haven't heard much from it every since. Also, I can play Zero Mission instead, yes?

Basically. The story itself has actually been "finished" since Fusion's release in 2002. Every game since then has either been a spin-off or something used to fill the gaps in the story, like the Prime trilogy. Anything else they could add to the story would just seem contrived--and that's exactly how Other M felt.

Other M was a bizarre anomaly, because it doesn't add anything to the story, yet it tries so hard to by giving Samus these brooding, whiny monologues about what it's like being the only woman in the Galactic Federation and bla bla bla. They made her out to be this petulant, emotionless child--and story-wise, this comes straight after Super Metroid.

You know--the absolute climax of her entire story, and the part after which you'd expect her to REALLY mature as a character.

Apart from ruining her character, the gameplay sucked ass, too, even though some people thought it was okay. Think of Fallout 3, except the story was destroyed not by some unfamiliar third party--but the man himself, Yoshio Sakamoto, who wrote all the previous Metroid games, too. He's basically regarded by Metroid fans as the George Lucas of video games. Once great, but not so much anymore.

There hasn't been a mainline Metroid game since, because there's really not much left you can do with the story at this point. All the gaps have been filled, any Other M was awkwardly squeezed in like a fat guy in an airplane seat. No one asked for Federation Force, but spin-offs are all you can really derive from the game's lore anymore.

All right, this is starting to make me sad--play Super Metroid please. :)

Other M is fanfic-tier. According to Miyamoto, the only way he wants a Metroid game is Prime-style. Said that he's got NSMB for 2D platformers, so he wouldn't care to produce another 2D Metroid.

RIP the Gameboy, 2D Metroid died with it.

Zero Mission wouldn't be a bad start. It's a remake of Metroid I, but it was also the debut of Samus's Zero Suit.

It also contains a port of the NES Metroid as a bonus, if you can unlock it.

Ah yes, I do love it when a series you love gets destroyed. It sounds bad too since it's the OG guy that did it. Anyway, should I just finish this remake of M2 first? I'm enjoying it. And then Super M after? And then the remake of the original or Fusion I guess. Fusion sounds fun.  And it sounds to me like they should more or less start a different plot completely if they're gonna advance the Metroid series.

Gunpei Yokoi was the Gary Kurtz to Sakamoto's George Lucas. AKA, soon after he stopped producing the games (because death, rip Yokoi), everything Sakamoto touched dropped in quality.

Not to say everything after was bad (Fusion, Zero Mission), but there's definitely a shift in direction. Hell, just look at the stealth sequence in Zero Mission. It takes two seconds to figure out whose idea that was.

Sounds like what happened with Kojima after his assistant writer left after Peace Walker. The quality in writing from that to MGSV was staggering. Peace Walker is just as good, if not better than MGS3's story, and 5 was just... yeah. So many creative decisions that hurt that game.

Yeah, do it like that, that sounds good.

A reboot would be interesting. Not sure how I'd feel about that.

The original seems very... well, basic. Because of the time and all that.

and idk of a Reboot, so much as just a new story. But then again, a reboot in the FPS style might be cool.

They didn't hit the source, a rehost got hit. People are assuming it's the same guy who pretends to be a Nintendo employee and gets Nintendo porn and fangames taken down.

According to DoctorM64  (AM2R Creator), he hasn't been hit with a DMCA by email or otherwise.

Apparently the DMCA was filed by a Brian Sniffen, located in Oregon (so this isn't Jason Allen, obsessive ex-Nintendo employee). His law firm has represented Nintendo in the past, but whether he has acted at the behest of Nintendo has not been established.

Even if he has, it's confusing that they didn't issue one to the actual source of the fangame. They DMCA the MetroidDb, a fansite hosting a mirror, instead of a C&D on development and distribution and they've completely ignored the creator. Something's weird about this.

Super understandable that Nintendo would hit it with a DMCA. They still have plans to resell NES and SNES games for the next 80 years.

Game hasn't been touched. A fansite got a DMCA notice from a lawyer (not NoA or NoJ firsthand), and no follow up has been made on it.

I just started playing. Ive gotten about 28% item completion and I just killed my first Gamma Metroid.

The game is great so far exept for, ironicly, the Metroids themseves. So far they just throw themselvesat you agressively with next to no mechanics and no strategy. You just spam missiles until enough of them connect with their lower half.
Arachnus rolling stage got me killed a couple time, but it wasnt too too bad.

Everything else has been great so far. I especially love the Codexes.

Ive missed one missile expansion ive seen so far and its the only one I have no idea how to get through.

IMO Fusion and Zero Mission are two of the best GBA games available.
