Kind of related. Is the WiiU worth it? I want it primarily for the Metroid digital trilogy bundle that was recently announced. I only played Metroid Prime on the Gamecube over a decade ago and never finished it. I just have some questions:

Is there a decent selection of retro games available in the Nintendo eShop?

What is using that control with a built in screen like? Is it just a secondary screen for menus and items, or can I take it into a separate room and play Metroid on it?

How big is the Hard Drive? I would probably get most games digitally.

Is the pro controller worth the price?

Is it worth getting it for just Smash, Metroid, and potentially Mario Kart? I won't be playing locally with anyone, it would mainly be for solo gaming.
Wii U is arguably the best next gen console depending on your interests. There is certainly not a lack of quality games to choose from. A lot of good titles coming up as well.

Would recommend the black deluxe version over the standard white which isn't worth it. Even then the hdd is pathetic for a digital purchaser. 32gb iirc (compared to 8gb for the white), so you may eventually have to upgrade with an external which thankfully is supported.

Hear nothing but praise for the pro controllers. Don't have one myself as I like the gamepad just fine. My second favorite controller after the ds4. Yes you can play your games on it around the house almost like a handheld. It streams from the wii u. What its used for while playing on the TV varies from game to game. Some use it really well as a secondary device. Others not at all.

Would definitely recommend a wii u to anyone remotely interested in ninty games. Though I'd make sure there are games you are interested in down the line.

Are they bringing one of those out every year now or something?I swear I'm seeing 'new 3ds' all the time or something. It's getting like fucking apple.
3DS has been around since, what, 2010? The only difference between the "versions" is the size of the console, so it's not really like a 5/5S/5C thing. Console's had a five year run, and the N3DS is more like a DSi than a new entry: it's a 3DS with a few games that can run only on it. They'll still be making 3DS games after this, so unless some N3DS games come out that you just have to have or you want a second analog stick, there's no point in upgrading.

It seems like apple, where they release a *slight* upgrade every year that costs more money thn the last and then fase out the last version within the year.

I feel sorry for people who genuinely fall for this kind of thing.
They haven't fazed out the normal 3DS at all up until now, and even then that's spotty. The ONLY "upgrade" in the past five years was the screen size. And that's debatable as an upgrade because the screens are the same resolution, so everything looks more blurry and the system is more bulky.

So they're charging more money for a worse thing?

And people call EA a moneygrab.

3DS XL is the same price as the 3DS was when it released. There's only a difference because they reduced the price of the normal 3DS when it launched. Same thing when they released the 2DS, although it came out cheaper initially.

There have been three kinds of 3DS:

-3DS
-3DS XL (3DS, but bigger screen and easier to hold for people with big hands)
-2DS (no 3D for the people who want longer battery life and don't use the 3D function)

She didn't say it was worse, and it's definitely not worse. Especially as a Smash player. I enjoy actually... seeing what's happening on-screen.

But it's just blurier. I just can't see the point.

...It's not blurrier. That was a poor word choice. She just meant that the pixels are bigger. That doesn't make it blurrier, though. Literally everything is crystal clear, but then again, I can't tell 480p from 1080p, sooo...

The 2DS was pointless, I'll give you that.

It's pointless to reduce the price on the existing version when a new one comes out? This happens with electronics everywhere. Look at PC parts, GOTY editions of games, 360/PS3/Wii system changes, etc.

Eh, battery lasts longer and a lot of people never bother with the 3D stuff. It's cheaper too, so I can see why some people would like it.

The thing is, no 3DS is really "better" than the other. They're just making them in reaction to complaints. "It's too small! What's the point of 3D? Why does it die so fast?"

Well, my biggest gripes with the 2DS lied with its design. Not only is it ugly, it lost the clamshell thing. I can't fold it up. That's really a big issue for me, because I actually like to protect my screens. And there's two of them. One's much easier to fuck up than the other.

But yeah, I guess no one uses the 3D <_<

(that's why there's a 3d switch)

We both know how Nintendo is with their designs and names. 2DS is 3DS games in 2D, so the console itself is "flat"! And removing 3D capability killed two birds with one stone: no 3D gimmick, and it improved the battery life by not being there at all.

Fucking stupid yeah, but I see the connection.

the Gamecube is a cube.

3DS is a DS with a 3D option.

Wii was made to be used by everyone.

Wii U is a Wii with more of a focus on "U".

Gameboy Advance was a more "advanced" Gameboy.

I'm actually 99% sure that Nintendo starts with a name and builds around that.

Yes, the actual name is New 3DS. That way you can buy a new 3DS for the same price as a used New 3DS,  or get a new New 3DS for a little more than a new old 3DS.

Sure it is.

There's a decent selection of retro games available. Sega Genesis, Game Gear, NES, SNES, Neo Geo, etc. They don't have N64 and GC support ATM but it should happen soon. In the meantime, DS games are coming to the Wii U virtual console.

The Wii U gamepad can be used for both maps (and whatever else the devs want to use the gamepad for) and off-tv play. With the metroid trilogy you will have to use the Wii mote and nunchuck, technically you could play metroid away from the TV (the gamepad has a sensor bar built into it) but it would be inconvenient for sure. Pretty much every Wii U game supports off-tv play without needed an extra controller.

The hard drive is 32gb. A variety of external hard drives are supported.

The pro controller is excellent. I highly recommend if you plan on playing Smash or Mario Kart with friends.

It really is. Those games are ones you could play for hundreds of hours but I'm sure you will find other games you would want to play. Star Fox, Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Maker, and Xenoblade are all on the plate for this year and there's plenty of great games from 2013-2014.

Mistanosejob, you can play N64 games on Wii U using the "Wii Mode". You have to use the Wii remote for it though, since Wii Mode uses the Wii hardware inside the system.

Well, the Wii U is actually a Wii U and Wii. When you play a Wii game on the Wii U, you aren't technically running the Wii U at all. That's why you have to use a Wii controller, because you're just playing a Wii.
