Horror games are going down the pooper.

It saddens me shit like Five Nights At Freddies and Slender are what's popular now. I'd say the point RE 5 became steroid boulder punching simulator is where crap began to slip. Remember the days of Silent Hill, Resident Evil & F.E.A.R? Games that were not only games but actually scared you? Instead of the pointless jumpscare shit that we have now? I have some faith in Kojima for Silent Hills but not overblown hype like everyone else has. And RE Revelations 2 sounds extremely dumb and goofy although I haven't seen any gameplay. I just hope we get some better games. Is that too much to ask?

I read an article blaming graphics, since story and atmosphere have taken a back seat to ULTRA HD HORRIFIC DISFIGUREMENT. Also, too many sequels. The more you know about a universe, the less scary it is.

Remember when horror games were subtle? When the fear of something being there was the scariest thing?

Nowadays what constitutes as scary is something jumping out at you or a gory death or something. That's not scary, just surprising or disgusting.

FEAR isn't scary at all IMO. In fact it's one of those few games where you start feeling like such a bada$$ that you actually start feeling sorry for your enemies [especially given the AI/combat dialogue]. And Alien Isolation was pretty damn great too [my GOTY 2014].

I agree with your point wholeheartedly though.

PT seemed pretty terrifying, and that was just a hallway. I'd expect Silent Hills to be somewhat decent.
Outlast seemed popular, but I haven't played it so can't judge.

FEAR was never meant to be scary. Any game that gives you a shotgun forfeits the fear factor. Have you played Five Nights at Freddy's? As dumb of a game that it is, it's still really suspenseful and fun.

Also, Amnesia 1 & 2 are timeless horror games.

F.E.A.R didn't scare me one bit, it was horror yes but it was just cliche, you know what my favorite F.E.A.R game is? F.E.A.R 3, i don't care what people say about that game, still one of my favorite games to date.

I honestly think horror games are making a come back. Resident Evil is realizing that 5 and 6 weren't exactly the way to go (6 was ew), indie devs are driving a lot of it such as Outlast and what not, and even the new Silent Hill game is looking great from the PT demo.

I think it was huge in the 90's, then fell in the 2000's decade, and is now slowly making a rise back up.

Alien Isolation is the first game I've ever played that frightened me to an extreme degree.
The first time I encountered the unscripted alien, I hid under a stair case clutching my motion tracker for ten minutes.
