I'm turning 20 in October, so no. I was very much alive when it was out.

I don't give a fuck if there was "nothing like it" at the time. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing.
The game is dated as hell and I didn't enjoy it. Deal with it.

I remember giving them plasma rifles at every oppurtunity so they could live a little longer.

Gotta disagree about the plot. It was a fun and refreshing take on a classic narrative with a great mix of horror, adventure, and action. The characters needed to be archetypes so you could jump right into the game, and frankly I appreciate when a developer knows that we don't really give a shit about Foehammer's marital problems and just tells us she's a badass pilot chick. The twists were fun, and the Flood's reveal was masterful in building tension. It wasn't burdened by all the dark pseudo-ethical nonsense of some of the later games and didn't beat us over the head with the relationship between Chief and Cortana; Chief was a blank slate for the player, exactly as Bungie intended.

I think you could figure out what happened just by looking at your surroundings...like the dead marines and pools of blood and dropped weapons and the fleeing Covenant and the lack of Elites and the crashed Pelican and Spirit dropships and the creepy music and the signs of battle and yeah.

Unfortunately the series doesn't really get any better from here on out.

Expectation spoilers for all the future games

Halo 2 ends too abruptly for it to be any better than CE, and what's there isn't all that great to begin with. 3 sucks, Reach sucks, and 4, on its own, sucks. I haven't played ODST. Speaking strictly about the campaigns, here.

Still hoping that you'll get around to playing MGS1/3 soon. Preferably 3, it's the best one.
