So, let's check the list for how Destiny has been handled so far;

  • Key staff original to the studio left, or was fired over power games in steering the game versus the publisher's demands
  • Game faces serious changes and cuts a year before release (thus breaking a game that was on development at least since late 2010)
  • Gets rid of old fans that did not move onto the new IP, and revokes their access from the forums unless they accept and move on with them
  • Exaggerated advertising and hype generation showed a distorted picture of what the game would be. People in stores nowadays are doubtful when they look at the cover of Destiny and its pricing versus the price of other AAA games.
  • Game is released with lack of content, and content comes as DLC and then microtransactions. Also trading isn't enabled in the game, thus forcing a lack of a player-driven economy (where in the first place Bungie wanted to create a player economy in Destiny) and the only economy is based on endless grinding and RNG.
  • Cosmetic micro-transactions added, especially emotes that were lacking in the base game. The revenue from these will be used to probably encourage further support for the game down the line. There is no "free" updates in Destiny, it's just updates fueled by the micro-transactions.

Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.
Oh, yeah, the service that in the first place decided that text chat was useless in an online game, and the voice chat is a mess in most situations? Also, people throw a good amount of money to the game. Destiny currently has a high retail price, like other Activision titles. So, why do people need to pay even more for a game that's really, beyond any recovery besides the extra revenue from impulse buying and curiosity?

If you’re still skeptical, you can log in next week and take a look for yourself. We’ll be dropping some free Silver into your account so you can purchase an emote or two and become legend through the power of dance.
Skeptical of what, microtransactions? I am not. I've bought things on microtransactions, especially cosmetic ones, from the flute in Guild Wars 2 to CS:GO skins. I am skeptical that the team at Bungie can really deliver to the big, fat promise that the game will improve over time unless I shill out 50 Euros every couple months between DLC and microtransactions. It's probably this way because it's a console release. Subscriptions are too hard to implement due to the publisher and either Microsoft or Sony having a problem with monthly or recurring subscriptions on top of theirs.

I also think that throwing cash won't really fix the main story of the game that feels rushed, has sudden turns, spasms and poor character development.

I don't have an issue as long as this doesn't escalate into something worse.

And the profits of this system somehow benefit us all.

It doeen't benefit anyone. It's not like Halo 5 or Mass Effect 3 or Battlefield 4 where microtransaction content is fuelling free dlc in the form of maps and weapons and such. Bungie is using this to make a quick buck on top of the overpriced dlc that is mandatory if you want to have a somewhat decent experience with the game.

With how Bungie have been treating their fans lately, the only thing that surprises me about this is how long it took 'em. G;ad I never picked up the game.

"Destiny to Introduce Microtransactions and Make Future Content Free" - The Guardian, Tuesday October 6th, 2015

Quote
All the new story content for the next year of Destiny, Bungie’s first new franchise since it launched Halo in 2001, will be free, as the company continues with a major overhaul of the multiplayer online game following its troubled first year.

To make up for the lost revenue from giving away the content for free, Bungie has announced plans to introduce microtransactions to the game for the first time, letting users spend real money to buy cosmetic items such as character gestures and visual changes to their “Sparrow” hover bike in game.

"Destiny's DLC Is Changing Big Time" - Kotaku, October 5th, 2015

Quote
We hear this paid DLC will be limited to cosmetic items like emotes and sparrow skins. And the developers at Bungie will be doling out free story content every few months until next fall.

Rather than sell big expansion packs like they did last year, Bungie is planning on giving out quests and missions for free, sources say. This will likely involve big drops every few months until the fall of 2016 but could also include trickles of smaller stuff throughout the year.

You may remember a marketing slide from earlier this year that discussed a two-year roadmap for Destiny. Turns out that slide is out of date—instead of selling two big packs of downloadable content over the next year, Bungie is going with cosmetic microtransactions and free content.

"Introducing Eververse Trading Company" - Bungie, October 5th, 2015

Quote
We’ve already said that there’s more to discover in The Taken King – and there is – but beyond the content available in the launch window of The Taken King, our goal is to continue creating experiences that will keep the game fresh, fun, and surprising. Today, we wanted to share with you a new element we’re incorporating into Year Two of Destiny.

This coming Tuesday, October 13th, Tess Everis will return to The Tower with a new look, a new storefront, and some new items to sell, courtesy of Eververse Trading Company. Initially, Tess will offer eighteen brand new emotes. Like the trio of emotes offered via The Taken King Collector’s Edition, these emotes are completely optional, and won’t impact the action game in any way.

If you’re not interested in what Tess has to offer, you won’t ever be forced to pluck an item off of her shelf. You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped.

You were saying?

Destiny improves at an exponential rate. The amount that changes in each significant update is fantastic. It's still shit, mind you, but at this rate, it could eventually become what we all thought it would be. Free updates that are paid for by the microtransaction that are 100% cosmetic? I'm wholly okay with that. Activision has a good track record with stuff like this. Unlike any of the publisher of those games listed above.

Well that was quick
I really hope this breaks the camels back. People needed a reason to really kick Bungie in the ass and I hope this is it.

You get 2 free emotes and then you can buy more with micro transactions

What's the big deal

The two emotes everyone wants are conveniently more expensive than the silver they give you

I'll just post what I posted in there:

Quote
Most* of this would be justifiable and, in my opinion, encouraged if Bungie opted to use the funds to deliver the next Vex expansion and the Forge of Gods expansion for free.

But that needs to be confirmed first, and until such a time, should necessitate beration against Bungie until we get an answer or a fix.

*The Heuristic, Indomitable and Valourous Light all need to go. Everything else is simply a way for people left behind to catch up, and will not benefit low-end players unfairly against high-end players

Well, the carlton was definitely what I had my eye on.

What's even worse is that you're only 100 silver off -- but you need to pay $5 instead of $1 for that extra 100 because that's the least amount you can buy as a bundle.

It's fucking mental.

Exactly. Why are these emotes randomly more expensive than every other one when they are all cosmetic?
They want to make more money plain and  simple.

Even the shills over at Planet Destiny are pissed off by this.

This is the fucking shit that irks me, and why I'm so adamantly against these publishers. It's why I play their expansions illegally.

They have different tiers of emotes, and the Legendaries cost more. They knew which ones would be more popular, and made those ones just expensive enough to necessitate a $5 purchase.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
