YouTube has confirmed the forthcoming launch of a monthly subscription option that will let users bypass the ads that normally run in front of videos.

Word of the new service came to light earlier today, when Bloomberg reported on an email sent to video creators that said, "By creating a new paid offering, we'll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising service." Google later confirmed that the report was legitimate, and that revenues would be shared.
"While we can't comment on ongoing discussions, giving fans more choice to enjoy the content they love and creators more opportunity to earn revenue are always amongst our top priorities," it said in a statement.

The subscription fee hasn't been set and there's no word on when the new service option will be rolled out. The notification of the coming change was sent out to content creators in order to give them sufficient time to review and agree to changes in their terms of agreement.

Personally I support the channels I enjoy via direct donations.  With that and the fact that you can just use AdBlock or uBlock to get rid of ads, will anyone here be using this?

AdBlock does cause huge problems for content creators.  For people whose livelihoods rely on ad revenue (a lot of fucking people) having a huge chunk of that potential revenue washed away because someone doesn't want to watch a 30-second ad probably hurts.

That said, many channels are now incorporating ads into the videos themselves.  Like Roosterteeth's or LinusTechTips' endorsement of products at the beginning of their shows.  I think we'll see a transition to that type of advertising exclusively in the coming years.

Ads aren't the only way sites generate revenue you know, especially larger more popular sites. The internet won't dwindle away just because people use ad-blockers.

There are a number of ways, I don't really know every one of them, but things like clicking links, generating more visitors on their sites, and if a group is really sneaky, an anti-ad-blocker. Individuals use these methods as well, not only that but people sometimes add in small fees for their products, programs, art, music, and people pay for them too. Ads are just one of the easiest ways, there are much better and less intrusive ways to get money on the internet.
