8/10, go see it if you can tolerate anime. It's beautifully animated. The dub is standard Funimation crew.

I completely forgot about it and haven't even seen it yet.
What is the most interesting thing about the movie? Least?

How did you come up with your score?

Most: animation style
Least: the use of particular anime storytelling tropes that I won't get into for spoiler reasons
Score: It's mostly arbitrary. I start at a 5/10 and try to add or subtract based on what I liked or didn't like. It was a beautifully animated movie, had a compelling story and characters, and despite having a fairly run of the mill body-swapping concept, it executed it in a unique and interesting way. Cons are that the music was generic anime fare, and the ending was stretched quite a bit, which is common in Mokoto Shinkai's movies, apparently.

What might convince me to see this movie before Garden of Words? Do you have a preference between the two?
I haven't seen either of them yet.

I'm seeing it tomorrow, I've waited over a year to see it, I love Shinkai's works.

Have you seen 5 Centimeters Per Second?

Haven't seen that, but my wife recommends it. The biggest reason to see it now is because you'll get to see it in theaters and support the studio via ticket sales.

I also am shocked to hear Shinkai himself tell people not to go see his own movie. Yeah the people comparing him to Miyazaki are being ridiculous because they're both completely different in styles, but that doesn't mean his movies aren't just as good.

Seems like typical Japanese humility. They throw compliments back and self deprecate as a social norm. I sincerely doubt he meant most of what he said there.

That said, comparisons to Miyazaki really are  too generous. The animation is good but he has a long way to go in terms of writing and storytelling.

Just got back from seeing it, here is my review. SPOILER WARNING.

Initial thoughts: Amazing, absolutely amazing; I went with a friend who is not into anime at all but even she thought it was a really good movie (we watched the subbed version BTW). I'm torn on whether or not I liked this movie more than 5CMPS, they're both on par with each other in terms of quality. I'm going to compare this movie a lot to 5CMPS because they're both herald as Shinkai's best works, but right now I'm leaning on 5CMPS purely because of how it slowly pulled the rug out from under you at the end.

So I went in already knowing the basic plot to the movie, I had a rough idea on how everything was going to play out, I was just missing all the extra details into how it was played out. I knew Mitsuha saved everyone in the end and that they were gonna meet five years later. I didn't know about how Mitsuha met Taki three years prior and how they were able to convince the town to evacuate. Knowing how all the minute details played out helped make it a still memorable experience even with me knowing the spoilers.

So I went in thinking it was going to be good and it was even better than I expected. However this wouldn't be a good review if I didn't bring up criticisms. The beginning felt a bit jarring/convoluted. I understand Shinkai wanted people to figure out what was going on between Mitsuha and Taki on their own before revealing it on screen with both of them saying it at the same time, but initially it felt confusing with Mitsuha. The movie didn't do a good job the first time of Mitsuha's swap with Taki because it went from Taki being in her body to her being herself. Also the generic minute and thirty second anime opening felt forced, like it was only in there to appease anime fans and really felt out of place. Music was also not very memorable saved for the main theme that played in all the trailers and during the initial swap reveal between the two.

But the rest of the movie was done perfectly. No shot felt out of place and all the cast filled their roles perfectly. Not to mention there was to discontinuities between VAs playing the role of either Taki or Mitsuha when swapped or not swapped. I also wasn't expecting Shinkai to actually show something like the meteor destroying the city in the film. It was very daring to actually show it in a film that has a light atmosphere like this one (even after the reveal of Imotori's destruction) although I feel it was something that should have been left out. The destruction scene doesn't fit well with the rest of scenery porn Shinkai is known for, and man this movie is right on par with 5CMPS in terms of scenery porn.

I don't know whether to count as a negative or positive so I kept it as a neutral but it is an anime film and tropes are present. It's a bit unusual considering 5CMPS had little to no trops and that counts for both the film and the manga. Things like "EEEEEEHHHHH?!?!?!?!" and groping boobs is ever present in this film. However, considering the "EH?!" was toned down to believable scenarios and the boob groping was done to the individuals self (kind of?) it led to a good laugh; specifically when Mitsuha grabs her crotch when in Taki's body and Taki is crying when he's groping his boobs in Mitsuha's body seeing her sister alive. All in all, they weren't bad additions to the film.

In summary: This movie was fucking near-perfect and I feel I'll be torn for some time on whether or not this was better than 5CMPS. Both pulled my heart strings but I feel Your Name is a very fleshed out movie that lives up to all the praise it has been getting. there are some notable flaws but they don't stop the movie from being able to really get your emotions going.

9/10
