fuck you
What's a 2:2? I'll be receiving my grades next week.

Second class
I still have no clue what that means.
50%-60%.

Get my results in a few days, I'll be crushed if I don't get a first.
that's a passing grade???

40% is a pass
Lol, and the Europoort say the the US has it too easy.
Heard the opposite tbh

I've always heard education was easy in the US.
Well, I heard their way of teaching is easy or rather shit, but grades aren't the easiest things. But this is from my american friend who's a dumbass.

Anything under 70% is failure.

US also has extra credits where you can just get points towards a pass for going in to something extra or something

To pass here, some modules have criteria like you have to have an attendance of at least 80%, have at least an attempt on every piece of coursework even if you do badly, and if you don't meet some of them they'll just fail you for the entire module which means you fail the year, and they're usually different for every module

This is extremely uncommon. In fact many universities ban it outright

many of my classes if I miss 3 days without a note from a doctor I fail. Several others have attendance as part of the grade

if you don't attempt an assignment you would probably fail here just by not having the points from that assignment

I can only speak for my university and ones I know about but

90%-100% A- very good
80%-89% B- good
70%-79% C- satisfactory
60%-69% D - if it's a course in your field of study it's a fail, if it's an elective (taken just because you want to, you get credit)
Anything less is failing outright

70 is very good here

anything above 80 is pretty much impossible unless you get your name on the news for getting a disease or algorithm named after you

Kinda like a built in genius grade. I feel like I would have been more competitive if this is how it worked in America.

I believe you completely!I'm just saying the article is pretty terrible

First of all comparing a single school to in the US to a single school in the UK is pretty stupid in the first place. There's thousands of colleges in the US and hundreds in the UK. Not all of them will provide the same experience.

Second of all, he's comparing his experience with an undergraduate in an "easy" major to an experience getting his masters in a different field. Doesn't really make much sense.

He also assumes all colleges (and all professors) behave the same way his proffesors do. For example very very few of my classes have had quizzes and daily work. I'm assuming he was in small journalism classes but when your in a lecture hall of 300+ doing analytical chemistry the teacher isn't going to give quizzes. Usually (at my school) you'll have a midterm, a final, and use an electronic clicker to participate in lectures but this is usually only worth 5-10%. Other class I've had had a few exams and a grade for accuracy of your lab work.

He also says proffesors here have an incentive to help you when they don't, unless they break the law it's borderline impossible to fire a Proffesor or a teacher in the US. Most of them are there to do their own research and only teach because they have to

I'm not argueing that the us is just as hard as the uk or vice verse but that article sucked

It's seems like in the UK you're presented with a TON of information and they want you to be able to effectively use/ know most of it, where in the US were given significantly less information, and more chances to earn points but are expected to know almost all of it.

Joking of course, I'm aware the education systems are completely different.
50% still seems like a strange threshold for passing though.
Like if you're a waiter, and you only get half your orders right, or your a lawyer and only win half your cases, that's pretty bad
I think it makes sense. 51% is more than half, therefore a sufficient amount. It's not a good grade, but it's a pass. All depends on the difficulty of the courses of course. A friend of mine is a civil engineer who managed to graduate with a 67% average here. He then spent a semester of his second Master's in the US and graduated with a 98% at one of the best 20 engineering universities in America, saying he breezed through it all with little to no issues and hardly any studying. You should ask Ginger about it. A 60% pass in some of the classes in her program is probably comparable to an A or 90% back in her American university.

But I can see how it could be considered strange, yeah.
He is right. I breezed through the American university system. When I got here, I was told that what I achieved in the US was great, but don't expect perfection or near perfection here. The 19-20 grade range is for students who have achieved an unheard of expertise in a subject. On exams here, it isn't enough to know the right answer, but you must be able to analytically assess why an answer is right. So technically, it is possible to have the right answer with a poor explanation be award less points than an impressive explanation with the wrong conclusion. While this may be similar in some American universities, my university experience showed that most questions had one right answer with only one correct line of reasoning (barring certain subjects like Philosophy and stuff).

Oh, and multiple choice exams...LOL, what are those? They are incredibly rare, and if you do get one, pray you know the answers because not only to you get no points for not answering a question, but you receive negative points for answering a question incorrectly.

Maybe it's because I'm in an honors program at an honors university but my experiences don't sound all that different other than the grading system  and the red solo cups

But again one persons experiences aren't indicative of the entire university system
