Would you donate to Wikipedia?

Wikipedia's been asking for donations frequently this winter. I appreciate Wikipedia's existence, so at times, I feel very compelled to donate whatever amount I have to keep the website independent. I haven't yet done so, however, because of my crippling "drop in the bucket" mentality.

I wish they would just put a small ad up.

It wouldn't even have to be at the top or be flashy at all. And it wouldn't matter that it would get blocked by a lot of popup blockers since the site is so incredibly popular. A single ad would keep them from having to beg for money every year.

I'd prefer an ad over that obnoxious banner, anyway.

I think Wikipedia's role on the internet, and even day-to-day is important. However, I would leave the task of donating to organizations and individuals who can give a meaningful amount.

That's against their philosophy. Which is one I also agree with, but realistically only few organizations can achieve it.

Well that's the thing... It's Wikipedia! They don't need to do the CPM bullshit us smalltime site owners have to do. They can just put up a direct advertisement from some big brand (with the understanding that it wouldn't affect articles made about them, of course, for fairness) and have it completely made.

Yeah, I understand that the Wikimedia Foundation would never put ads up. I just think it's a bit ridiculous, considering the size of the donation banner that pops up from time to time (I mean seriously, does that thing get bigger every year?).

I don't donate because their donation bar is essentially the same as an advertisement. If you load the page for a half second and start reading only to be thrown off by a banner which shifts the entire page downwards, it's annoying as hell. I've stopped using the site entirely until they finish with their donation bullshit for the year.
