Work-Life Balance

Have you given thought to what level of life you actually want? This is an important question. It's easy to say "better" and leave it at that. But if you're always trying to make it better, you end up in a vicious cycle of working towards a better life, finding you're working so much that you're not enjoying it, and then work even harder to make your life better.

You end up living to work instead of working to live.

The alternative is to set a defined goal and work only to achieve it. When you reach it, you only work hard enough to maintain that.

So, with this in mind, what sort of lifestyle do you want?

I've got it pretty good right now. Inevitably a deployment will fuck that up. I think Americans in particular put too much of an emphasis on being early and staying late.

I plan to work the bare minimum required to keep myself alive, sheltered, and with the Internet and maybe some video games. Y'know, the necessities.

Sure, I won't make shitloads of money, but what's the point of shitloads of money if I don't have enough time to enjoy it?

9-5 M-F is all I do. I never bring work home or work any overtime. Sure that extra money and upper management having a more favorable opinion of me would be great. But its not worth it when sacrificing family time.

I work as a Slatsman, Manufacturing. Hours are 7:00am - 3:10pm, 5 days a week. I'm on a minimum wage salary but honestly I enjoy it, I could spend the rest of my life doing this job and still manage to pay off a house, isn't that hard when you're good at saving your money.

For the last 3 weeks I was asked to work overtime (3 hours more per weekday + 5 hours weekend work on Saturday) and I still make time for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, High School friends and gym.

The only obstacle in life is my parents, they're too controlling (guess that comes with the stupid Indian culture) would love nothing more than to move out but my mom wants me to stay with them till I'm 30.
