I just read this article and it got me so mad. To sum it up, there's a black character on The 100 named Wells Jaha. I liked this character, he was fantastic. He also died in the third episode. I've been searching the web for analysises and tributes to the character, but only get articles like the one above.

Articles that ask why he had to die. And then answer their own question with "well, because he was black and the writers are racist."

But that's not why. The reason Wells died was the reason myself and everyone else liked him. Ironically enough, the article I take such greivance with is the one that states this reason: "So for three episodes we get to see Wells as this really compelling character. He's brave and generous and wonderful and kind and everyone despises him. He's literally that wonderful and amazing. And smart and good at tactics and protective, and pretty much the single best person on the show. So obviously, he had to die."

Clearly that's not a sustainable character. He's the responsible one, the one who does the hard leadership jobs that no one wants to do while people like Bellamy take on the glamorous ones. The author of the article unintentionally hits the nail on the head here, and while her last line in what I quoted above is meant to be sarcastic, anyone with a modicum of storytelling knowledge could see that it's 100% true. So many conflicts down the line would be nonexistent if Wells was alive. He had to die, from the most basic plotting perspective.

Anyway, have you ever run into this problem in talking to people about ficticious works? Where the character's race has no bearing on anything, and yet the death of that character is somehow treated as inherently racist?

Are we going to get to the point where story quality is comprimised for real world "values"?

I can't even imagine how closed-minded and stupid someone would have to be to believe that someone decided to write a script for a tv series, create and cast a black character, kill that character off in a way that forwards the plot, and all because they secretly hate black people. What kind of warped reality some people live in.

I've never actually run into criticisms like this but I've seen people complaining that there aren't enough black actors in a WW2 movie (which wouldn't be historically accurate) and Game of Thrones (which is supposed to be based on medieval Europe). Doesn't surprise me people like in the OP exist.
