Why do sports fans say "We have to..." When talking about the team?

I'm listening to a couple of guys talking about the Giants. They keep saying "we need to get so and so out more" or "we need to draft them."

Bitch, you ain't on that team. There ain't no we. You will stand your happy ass up and clap and yell when they do what you think they should.

Like mentioned above with the military, it's because it is something you strongly associate with on an emotional or loyalty level. Sports brings out the tribal nature in people, the "them against us" mentality. That's why it is so loved.
