Why do people want aliens to exist?

No. That is literally the answer.
Confirmation of another intelligent species would be a huge scientific leap.

Well for the first time in the history of our species we would have confirmation that there is intelligent life on other planets and might give us insight on our own origins.
Also the novelty of the discovery would be pretty big in itself I would imagine.

It's pretty likely that they exist.

We just want confirmation of it so that we can finally have the answer to one of the biggest questions humanity as a whole has ever put out. It would have pretty significant philosophical and scientific implications.

we already know how life came about on earth and just knowing aliens exist wouldn't tell us shit about any of that rofl

This is a silly question if we're talking about intelligent life we were capable of communicating with. Obviously that would lead to the exchange of information and technology. If we're just talking about knowing that they exist, then there wouldn't be much stir in the scientific community, because we wouldn't have anything to study besides the thought of another sentient race elsewhere in the universe.

We have theories. As much as we think we know everything there is always a chance we're wrong.
I'm not disputing evolution but I think we could possibly learn a couple things.

Go think about an ideal scenario, and then multiple twists within that scenario.

It doesn't matter, because what may happen if you're correct based on no real information doesn't have to happen.

Not really. With time we'll expand out into those reaches ourselves. With more time there will be countless new intelligent species that are our ancestors.

Well that or we die out.

Emotions are there for a reason.

We feel disgust because our parents show disgust in certain things, so if we find them disgusting we will avoid them as well. We feel disgust because it makes us avoid it. There is logic behind it.

What logic is there in being scared about being alone in the world with only people from your city? You can always expand on your own, and there are lots of people that are so different from you in this city of yours. So what is so scary?

things are, because they are. They aren't there for your sake, and you don't have to interact with them. An empty planet is an empty planet, and because you usually try to exhaust resources you find the thought of it being empty scary. Maybe I didn't hit the nail in the spot with that guess, but the underlying motive probably applies to you. You're being egotistical.

Well that or we die out.

Descendants, not ancestors.

But I still don't think it's going to happen. It just strikes me as odd (and unbelievably unlikely) that we would be the only sentience in the entire universe. Especially considering how easily life can form.
