Why do people say "Snow Machine" now instead of Snowmobile?

Where is "elsewhere"? I thought snowmobiles were called snowmobiles everywhere.

Also Sarah Palin's husband was hit by a so called "snowmachine" today, and is in the hospital. So that's twice in one week I've heard "snowmachine", which is strange to me since I've heard snowmobile for all of my life.
