Why do Americans call fuel 'gas'?

Like. ..its either petrol, unleaded petrol and diesel with slight variations. There is also 'gas' which is a more economical solution but not many cars run it.

Do Americans really all run gas ( Lpg or something like that) powered cars?

So a quick google finds that theyre one in the same......but then you have that gas powered system....so inconsistent

Gas is short for gasoline. If anything it's using the word petrol which doesn't make sense. Because petrol is short for petroleum which doesn't directly go in cars because only gasoline goes in cars.
