Why are restaurant servers called "waiters/waitresses..."

I think its because they make you wait - they are a giver of waiting, so to speak.

They "Wait" on you.
(speculation on my part here)

I'm guessing it comes from the time when the only waiters and waitresses were servants to rich people.
They'd "wait" on their masters until food/drink/whatever else was called to the table and stay until dismissed.
