Still a better duel than anything in the OT (except RotJ).

A flower which blooms on the battlefield
The duels in the prequels were pretty good though. One of the things they did well.

Too needlessly flashy and acrobatic for my tastes, but I can understand why people like them. I will say the duel in TPM is definitely the least silly, at least in my opinion. I personally would have made Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's fighting style more reserved and similar to the OT, and had Maul be the super acrobatic and "jump-y" character, in order to make him more unique and avoid making all force users superpowered space ninjas who defy gravity.

The combat style in the prequels, and why it's absent in the OT and EpVII makes sense though.

The duel between Anakin and Obi-wan in RotS is easily the best duel in the prequels imo.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
It's almost like it's choreographed and flashy like most action sequences are.

hey
I liked the slower paced style of the original trilogy, and even Episode VII more than the flashy style of the prequels

Episode VII especially

Episode VII seemed like a decent hybrid between flashy and practical.

Mostly flashy, but whatever. It's all entertaining to watch.

What I liked about the flashy moments of the duel in VII is that they were deliberate on the part of Kylo Ren; he was purposefully adding a needless flourish to his fighting style in order to intimidate Finn, showcasing his arrogance.

Nah. It was the Darth Vader duel from ESB reworked. Ren toys with Finn until Finn actually manages to score a hit, then Ren stops fucking around and finishes the fight in a few seconds.

That's what a lot of people have been saying, but I didn't really catch that, I guess. Guess I'll need to rewatch it or something.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!

Except he's right. Siths are known to do that to their opponents.

Vader does the same thing when he first fights Luke. Most of the time he's seeing what Luke can do and toys around with him. It's when Luke gets a few hits on Vader that pushes Vader's offense.

Darth Maul does the same thing against Pre Vizsla in the Clone Wars show.

It's the same in the OT. The only duel with this exception is ROTJ, but that's because Luke is supposed to be bashing on him. Actor safety you guys.

This is why animated Star Wars is obviously superior.
