They paid 27, 2 of it went to the bellhop, the other 25 went to the hotel.
The didn't pay 30 because they got 3 back so why would you ever think it would sum up to 30 somehow
Also why are you trying to add the 2 dollars the bellhop has twice.  You can't add the 2 dollars the bellhop is holding to the 27 they paid because those 2 dollars are already included in the 27 paid.

I'd already seen this before, it's a trap for people who can't into word problems and just assume the problem as stated makes sense
