Also, this is not exactly true. It can be used in a generic sense, but if you look at the word's roots, you'll notice that it contains the word "generate," which typically denotes creation, productivity, and progression.

Degeneracy, then, would semble regression. A degenerate is someone who symbolizes the death, stagnation, or destruction of a good society or civilization--like a drug addict would. Or a vagrant. Or a sex-craved slut whore.

I could use the word debaucherous, but that's harder to type, and it sounds like something an old curmudgeon would say. "Degenerate" has this tone of spite and malice that I just love. It's one of my favorite insults ever.

I was more talking about the epitome of regressive behavior thing. And honestly, if you despised drug addicts to the extent you saw them as that epitome, you could just call them scumfucks, pieces of shit, and all that.
