May as well move the derailed discussion here. No Verb/Kupo antics please.

What should be more important in selecting new ninjas: them being prudent to the rules and moderating well, or them being amicable representatives of the community who will attract new members?

If you'd like, I can try splitting off the posts on this from the last thread to continue discussion.

Or you can just start anew.

The role of a moderator is to moderate -- bottom line. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you want community representatives, appoint them.

We do. They're called forum ninjas.

Almost always, with moderation
If you think that the awful users that have been apart of the site in the past and still are here didn't contribute to newbies leaving then you haven't been here long enough

I don't think this. I literally said that we should have more friendly users instead of moderators.
Quote
having 17000 weebs on the staff limits our ability to attract people more than having one guy that says "Fuck yourself" a few times
Except you just did, or do mean to tell me you typed it, without thinking this to be the case? And yea, we need more friendly faces, however plenty of the current staff are friendly faces, and actually talk to members of the site, both old and new. Just because you don't get along with one, doesn't apply it to the rest.

Fuck you Icy, god damn that timing.

Moderators should moderate. I hardly think that having people who aren't Mr/Mrs Friendly as moderators would slow the flow of new users.
It's the users themselves that are what people see when they log on and go to the front page of The Flood and better moderators would weed out more unsavory users as they are better at that specific job. Weeding out bad users.

But having "friendly" members post here is beyond our control. Appointing friendly, welcoming mods is entirely possible.

That isn't contradictory whatsoever.

I showed my friend this website, and the first thing he said to me was "Everyone likes anime..." He hasn't been on this website since his first week here.

Anime is weird to those who don't like anime. Sorry, it's true. The staff being mostly comprised of weebs doesn't help.

It's nowhere near people being cunts to new users, though.

I thought the community representatives would be the monitors while the ninjas were to enforce the rules.

There's no sense having two positions for what should be one position, though.

You weren't here when Kiyo was voted into the staff based on popularity.

Then a few months later Kiyo revealed a bunch of user IPs.

Exactly. They're not mutually exclusive, but some people are more friendly than rule-prudent and vice versa. Luciana falls into the former camp, while Verbatim would be the latter.

Ninjas should enforce the rules, both by dealing with rule breaking and being an example of someone who's a good member

I wouldn't want ninjas who don't represent the community well, it almost feels like a double standard in a sense

I'm not saying we need "friendly" members. But if we have people on staff who are willing to go the distance and actually moderate then it's likely the number of "friendly" members will increase.

Cool beans. Why does that matter?

Just because we had one shitty elective doesn't mean we should drop the concept.

But this is completely irrelevant -- I don't think we should vote in moderators. I think moderators should be chosen on moderating merit, nothing more.

But being unfriendly isn't against the rules, nor is being a colossal cunt. There's nothing that a moderator can do to the unfriendly members. Which is why we need to compensate for that and have amicable ninjas who can foster a more welcoming site.

It's that or start banning assholes. Which I wouldn't be entirely opposed to.

That's what we have in place right now.

Moderators a chosen based on their ability to follow the rules and enforce them, but also on their personality displayed on the forum.

This should be removed. Their personality is irrelevant, I care about how good they are at the job.

Not necessarily, I'm just talking about which trait is more important in a moderator. We don't have a wide swath of people to choose from, though, so two positions may end up being the best choice.

Their personality directly dictates how they will enforce the rules.

That's sort of what I was implying at the end. I mean Dustin was here for an unreasonable amount of time before he got perma'd. That's the sort of person that should be dealt with quicker.
and again it's not about how friendly they are, it's entirely dependent on whether they follow the rules or not. If the rules are good and they are enforced then it should make for an enjoyable site.

True that, T. I'm thinking that changing the rules may be the best option. But if you try to curb all of this toxic speech on the site people will just scream "hugbox" and the conversation will be over.

Sigh.
