I suffered through football practices in order to get better.

I suffered through school in order to get and education.

I suffer through work in order to provide for my family.
NONE of this is suffering. None of it.

Losing your limbs is suffering.
Crippling illnesses are suffering.
Depression is suffering.

Physical pain, physical anguish is suffering.
Torture is suffering.

Of which you have no one but yourself to blame for, since you're the one who signed up. I don't really have much sympathy for you if you're an injured football player. That's what you signed up for, is to get injured, essentially.

I believe the context he's using is suffering pain to improve one's physical strength, stamina and skills.

Tell a burn victim, a rape victim, or a holocaust survivor about the suffering you've endured.
Tell them that you understand how they feel.

I don't think you would, kid.

Duh. It's still your own choice.

One of the key things about suffering is that you're not technically supposed to be imposed upon you.
Don't like football practice? Stop playing football. It's not suffering.

I'm 100% sure those experiences (while tragic) helped them grow as a person. There is always something positive to take out of something negative that happens.

And what if you're wrong? Which you are.

"Growing as a person" doesn't make suffering okay.

No, I do. But the fact that I have to is retarded. And I hate it. And you should, too.

They still bring it upon themselves. And that's only if the suffering is isolated to only them, if they start feeling pleasure by making others suffer, as far as I'm concerned, they deserve to be on my list.

But we don't hate it because that's life.
The fundamental difference seems to be in whether you believe suffering is a natural part of life.

Because anything that's easy SHOULD be worth doing. The fact that they aren't is a problem with our reality.

They don't. Punch a masochist in the face--he's not gonna appreciate it. That's not what a masochist is. With BDSM, consent is involved, and that's a big part of the process.

Then I hate life (and everyone else should, too). The reason I don't kill myself is because

1. Euthanasia is illegal
2. I can't be an advocate for anything that I believe in if I'm dead

All I'm saying is that some people get pleasure out of suffering and to eradicate suffering  would be to eradicate one of their pleasures.

That's a fairly miserable and sad existence that solely rests on you. You choose to feel distress about your situation.

No, it wouldn't. When I'm happy, I'm not suffering. But just because I'm not suffering, doesn't mean I'm not happy.

I don't even... Like, what?

Well, I believe that it still is technically suffering, and that your argument is nobody should experience extreme pain, distress or discomfort outside making choices that they're fully aware will bring them to pain, which is a fine point to make.

But, if you're a paid athlete, and you're absolutely burying yourself during a major event, you can experience an unbelieveable magnitude of pain. Making the choice to carry on is a display of mental fortitude, and potentially a disregard for one's own wellbeing, sure, but is by no means a lack of suffering.

Next time I see you remind me to lend you "Better to have never been" by David Benatar. It explains some of the stuff Verb's trying to get across.

The logic is flawless. The viewpoint is infallible if you believe in any kind of contemporary morality (which, I'm fairly sure you do). It just might be that Verb isn't explaining it all that well to you.

Very possible however I'm sensing my view of morality might differ quite a bit.
