If you bend your mind towards the challenge, the skill will follow in your hands
Depends on what you want to achieve with VPN. If you want to use VPN just to like play region blocked videogames (or games your ISP has routing problems with) or some other minor task, there is Windscribe, which has free base plans of 2 GB per month or 10 GB if you actually register with mail. If it's for privacy I don't know, but I saw people complaining on Windscribe, because it's in Canada and it also logs what you do on network it seems.

I basically just want to block my ISP from seeing what I'm doing.

If you only browse internet, then probably Tor is enough to hide you from ISP.

No, my friend has a large collection of movies and shows to send to me.

Actually I'm wrong, Tor doesn't hide you from ISP, it hides you from website owners and such. So VPNs, the problem with them is that free VPNs I know of limit bandwidth and I don't know much VPNs.

Before you go down that rabbit hole you should know that most VPN providers are more or less lying to you about their privacy masking abilities. It's not technically a lie, but it's deception in the fine print. VPNs are required to show some data and locations to ISPs. The shorthand is you're never really hidden no matter who you pick. If you wanted to be optimal about things, ideally you'd go with both a proxy and a vpn of your choosing in tandem with one another. But even that wouldn't mask you in full.

What's so outlandish about the shit your friend's sending that your isp need not know about it?

One of the places I worked from in the past used Nord. Seemed decent enough, not that there's some magic meter that tells you how much of your data is being viewed, so who can say really.

There's nothing outlandish about it. It's just technically piracy and my ISP has already disconnected service in the past due to people torrenting from my IP. I'd just rather take any simple precautions that I can.

Hey.
I came here from b.net after a few Floods invited me. None of them post on either b.net nor here anymore, which is sad. I was still active on b.net until for some bizarre reason, b.net admins locked out people who have not played Destiny. Even if you wanted to post on the offtopic section. After that, I fully moved here and have not returned to b.net since.
Please come play Halo with me.
I use Windscribe. You get 15gb monthly allowance if you register with an email and mention them in a tweet. I think you get bonus traffic if you refer a friend.

You could also use some public wifi somewhere like a McD or a library?

This isn't really a viable option as I will be downloading many hundreds of GB worth of files which will still probably take hours with my 200Mb down connection.
